The Erasmus+ Programme Guide is the key document for anybody who would like to have a thorough knowledge of the Erasmus+ programme.

Participants and participating organisations can find full details of all the opportunities supported by Erasmus+.

The 2017 Programme Guide is also available as an online version, with a more user friendly, accessible format to make it easier to find information.

A table of indicative funding amounts is also available for some centralised actions.

What is it?

The Erasmus+ Programme Guide (version 2 of 20/01/2017, incorporating the corrigendum of the same date) is an integral part of the 2017 Erasmus+ Call for Proposals.

Organisations and institutions seeking funding in the framework of this call must comply with the conditions for participation and funding expressed in this Guide.

The document provides information on:

  • the priorities of the programme,
  • the actions supported,
  • the funding available for different actions,
  • detailed information on participation.

Which language versions are available?

The Programme Guide is currently available in the following languages:

An online version is also available in English, French German Italian and Spanish (other language versions will be made available in 2017).

How to apply?

Organisations are invited to submit applications on-line to the National Agency in the relevant country or to the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency.

The 2017 on-line application forms and related documents are currently being prepared and will be available on the websites of either the National Agencies or the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, depending on the actions concerned.

Individuals seeking to apply should contact their organisation, institution, or educational establishment.

What are the main changes?

The main changes introduced in 2017 include:

  • The introduction of the concept of “European priorities in the national context” under KA2 Strategic Partnership. For more information on this, please visit the website of each relevant national Agency.
  • The funding rules for some decentralized actions have been fine-tuned,
  • The action "Sector Skills Alliances" is no longer covered by this General Call and Programme Guide and will be dealt with separately through a Specific Call for Proposals announced by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency.

As in 2016, the 2017 Programme Guide places a special focus on encouraging projects supporting social inclusion (notably of refugees and migrants), as well as preventing radicalisation.

Erasmus+ Online Linguistic Support

The Online Linguistic Support (OLS) is designed to assist Erasmus+ participants in improving their knowledge of the language in which they will work, study or volunteer abroad so that they can make the most out of this experience.

As the lack of language skills remains one of the main barriers to the participation in European education, training and youth mobility opportunities, OLS makes linguistic support accessible in a flexible and easy way. It also contributes to a specific objective of the Erasmus+ programme, which is to promote language learning and linguistic diversity.

More than 350,000 Erasmus+ participants test their language skills with OLS every year and have the opportunity to improve their level with OLS language courses. On average, participants who follow courses actively improve their proficiency by at least one CEFR level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).



Who can benefit from it?

The OLS is currently available for:

OLS is available for Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, English, Spanish, Finnish, French, Croatian, Hungarian, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak and Swedish, which are the main languages for more than 90% of all Erasmus+ experiences.

How does it work?

By taking the OLS language assessment before going abroad, Erasmus+ participants are able to determine their proficiency in the language they will use to study, work or volunteer. Taking this assessment before departure is a pre-requisite for higher education students, to make sure that they meet the recommended level at their receiving organisation (except for native speakers or in duly justified cases). The results of the language assessment do not prevent participants from taking part in Erasmus+.

Participants who wish to improve their language proficiency have the opportunity to follow an online language course before and during their time abroad. Access to the language course includes a great variety of Live Coaching activities, amongst which tutoring sessions and interactive MOOCs. Participants who are already sufficiently proficient in the main language used abroad (at least a B2 level) can follow a language course in the language of the country instead, provided that such language is available in OLS.

In cases where the main language is not covered by OLS, linguistic support is provided through other means by the sending or the receiving organisation. Upon their return, participants take the final assessment, which allows them to measure the progress made during their stay abroad.

How to participate?

If you have already been selected to go abroad with Erasmus+ and you meet the above criteria, your institution or organisation will send you a login and a password to access the OLS assessment and language course, if applicable.

Erasmus+ Online Linguistic Support for Refugees

Following the recent migration crisis, the European Commission has opened up OLS to 100,000 refugees over a 3-year period, accessible on a voluntary basis and free of charge, mobilising a €4 million budget. The aim is to support the efforts of EU countries to integrate refugees into Europe's education and training systems and ensure their skills development. Since the launch of this initiative, access to more than 53,000 language courses has been provided to refugees in participating countries.

Distance Calculator

For grant support to travel costs in the Erasmus+ Programme, travel distances must be calculated using the distance calculator.


The tool is not designed for individuals to determine how much they should receive in funding; these amounts are dependent on various factors, including administrative costs incurred by participating organisations and the National Agencies.

Based on the distance expressed in km, the corresponding distance band must be chosen in the application and report forms.

The distance calculator is designed for organisations taking part in the Erasmus+ Programme to calculate travel distances for grant support to individuals.


In order to use the calculator, you should:

  1. Begin typing a location in the "From:" box
    when provided with the list of locations, click on the correct one.
  2. Repeat the procedure for the "To:" box.
  3. Click "Calculate" to obtain the distance, provided in kilometres.

Please note that you must choose a specific city, town, or village and not a country.

If you do not click on an option in the "From" and "To" boxes, no result will be displayed.

Participant Portal

The Participant Portal is an electronic platform used to manage the Erasmus+ programme. Organisations or experts hoping to take part in Erasmus+ will have to register with the portal.


The portal offers a variety of features, services and tools for Erasmus+ participants to make it easier to apply for, monitor and manage proposals and/or projects online.

To sign up to the portal, users will have to open an account with EU Login.

Participant Identification Codes

A Participant Identification Code, or PIC, is a code issued to organisations that subscribe to the Participant Portal. Although registration is not compulsory, organisations that have registered in the Portal will not have to submit their legal and financial information for every application.

To obtain a PIC, you will have to open an EU login account; information on this can be found in the Portal FAQs and User Guide.
