What makes an active citizen?

‘Don’t ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country’. Following the advice of John F. Kennedy, many citizens around Europe are actively seeking to improve society. To support their efforts, a number of Erasmus+ projects are equipping adult learners with tools to raise awareness and be even more active and efficient.

Based on the current trend of using gamification in adult education, the EUrbanities project is developing a game application to empower citizens to more effectively influence local development processes that directly impact them. The game simulates neighbourhood participation and will be used in training and teaching activities to empower citizens. A similar course is being prepared by the LQN (Lebensqualität durch Nähe) project, to empower citizens to play an active role in their municipalities and tackle local challenges through the implementation of participatory initiatives.

Other projects address specific groups or causes, such as the GEPLE project (Gender Equality Political Leadership Education), which focuses on gender inequalities in European society and the underrepresentation of women in politics. The 6 partners, including an American one, will develop an online platform to exchange knowledge on this topic and create a resource hub for all those interested in promoting equal representation of women and men in political life.

Online citizenship is also increasingly important, but it implies a certain mastery of digital skills and media literacy. Citizens should now be able to distinguish between real and fake news, or understand the consequences of sharing opinions, content and images online. To address this challenge, the project ‘Getting ready for European Citizenship on-line’ is preparing a 5-module course to help turn European citizens into e-citizens.

These projects and many other projects in the field of adult education funded by Erasmus+, can provide you with inspiring ideas, useful material and interesting results and methodologies you can use to develop your own project or/ assist already existing projects in the field.
