  2. Tourism Studies, MS

    Definition Two year theory and research oriented graduate programme in Tourism at the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Iceland. It provides 120 ECTS units of credit and qualifies for the degree magister scientiarum, MS. Entrance requirements are BS degree in tourism studies or comparative degrees (BS or BA) with minimal grade of 6,5. The scope of research oriented project is 60 ECTS units. An MS degree provides access to doctoral education at level 3. Knowledge, skills and competence Upon completion of the MS programme, the student should be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills and competence as follows: 1. Knowledge and understanding1.1. The student has broadened the previous knowledge base and gained an in-depth insight into a chosen specialised topic within the field of tourism studies.1.2. The student has obtained an in-depth knowledge of the applicability and/or theoretical values within a specialised field of tourism studies.1.3. The student has a profound understanding of main methodologies and approaches that are used within the chosen specialised field.1.4.     Upon completing the program students should have the following Knowledge The student should have an overview of the field of tourism studies; the history, main theories, research traditions and contemporary issues in tourism research. The student should be knowledgeable about the role of tourism in culture and society and understand how to apply this knowledge in tourism and tourism research. The student should be knowledgeable about the tourism industry and understand how to apply this knowledge in research. The student should be able to apply knowledge and understanding of tourism to analyze the state of art, propose and argue for relevant measures and articulate research findings. Skills The student should be able to delimit a research problem, collect relevant data, analyse the data and mediate the results of research within the professional and academic communities of tourism. The student should be able to write and publish academic papers in peer reviewed media, make a conference presentation and publish original work on the web. Competences The student should be able to disseminate own research findings, survey and disseminate knowledge to the industry and academic community by publishing academic papers, material for the public, presentations and participation in public discourse on tourism.
