  1. Master's Programme in Physical Oceanography

Physical oceanography is based on theory and methods from classical mechanics and thermodynamics. Methods include observations in the sea using instruments based on latest technology, advanced methods to analyze observational data and simulation using mathematical models. OCM100 and OCM200 Physical oceanography I + II (15 + 7.5 credits): These courses give the theoretical foundation for studying the physics of the ocean, including currents, waves and effects of rotation and stratification.OC6310 Ocean models (15 credits): The course introduces numerical modelling of turbulence, heat and salt balances, sea ice, lakes, coastal seas and coupled basins.OC4920 Observing the Ocean from Micro to Macro Scale (15 credits): The course will provide an understanding of the ocean processes that impact its motion (e.g. circulation and property exchange) and the scales that they occur.Master thesis (30, 45 or 60 credits): Several active researchers may act as supervisors. Thesis work may also be supervised by external researchers at industry or public institutions. In addition to the courses above you are expected to add electable courses up to a total of 120 hec. MAR440 Marine project (15 credits) is recommended. Why Gothenburg? The Department of Marine Sciences at University of Gothenburg harbours all disciplines of marine research: physical oceanography, marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology and even conservation of marine heritage. The facilities at University of Gothenburg are excellent with a city-based campu ...

  5. Sea and Society, Master's Programme

The world's oceans are under increasing pressure from human activities such as fishing, coastal development and pollution, and marine resources are being deteriorated at an increasing rate, resulting in conflicts and loss of biodiversity. To understand and manage the complexity of these issues, integrated knowledge from several different disciplines are needed, including e.g. of history, social sciences, economy, law, and natural sciences. Addressing this challenge, the University of Gothenburg will start a new international, interdisciplinary master program (Master in Sea and Society) in 2019 to educate a new generation of students and professionals with a uniquely broad training for a career in e.g. marine/maritime authorities, industry, environmental courts, and multidisciplinary marine sciences. The programme aims to give a comprehensive analysis of the interactions between the marine ecosystem and socioeconomic systems of human society over time and into the future. It will further provide students with an understanding of the complexity of many of the problems that currently challenges a sustainable development of humans' use of the sea and new tools to meet this challenge. The programme has a strong multidisciplinary profile and integrates different disciplines in all the four mandatory courses of the first year of studies. The Sea and Society Relationship; Historical Perspectives, Present Status and Future Challenges, Bluegreen economy and sustainable use of marine resources, European Marine Directives ...

  6. Master's Programme in Theoretical Physics

The Master's Programme in Theoretical Physics gives a solid foundation in theoretical physics, with the possibility to specialize in e.g. cosmology, string theory, general relativity, condensed matter physics and quantum information. Aims and goals The masters program in theoretical physics has two main goals: first to provide the student with a solid mastery of the basic techniques of modern physics, in particular in the areas of quantum field theory, statistical mechanics and advanced numerical methods. Secondly, to offer the opportunity to a specialized and in depth study of a subject in the front line of modern research in theoretical physics. Content and range a. Courses. Mathematics, and to an increasing degree also numerical simulations and computer algebra, play an important role in theoretical physics. The masters students are given good possibilities to complement their education in theoretical physics with advanced courses in these areas. In addition, the students are offered a number of advanced courses in different areas of physics in order to further broaden their education. More detailed information about the courses in the program is available at: http://www.fysik.su.se/english/student/programmes/masters/theoretical/co... b. Thesis. The supervisors, and most of the lecturers, in the masters program are active researchers in different areas of modern theoretical physics such as cosmology, string theory, general relativity, condensed matter physics and quantum information. During the master thesi ...

  7. Master's Programme in Computational Physics

Aim and purpose of the programme In the Master's Programme in Computational Physics you will learn how to translate a mathematical model of a physical phenomenon into a robust computer program and then how to analyse the results from your calculations. You will study courses in programming, mathematical and numerical methods and deepen your knowledge in physics. Degree and job market This master's programme is designed to teach a physicist how to construct and apply numerical models to complicated physical phenomena. This does however not limit you as a master of computational physics. Your acquired knowledge has a much wider application. You will learn to analyse, model, and with a computer program describe complicated phenomena and to interpret the results of your calculations. This will make you an attractive collaborator in different areas ranging from academic particle physics over medical imaging all the way to fund analyst in the Bank of England! Content During the first year you will study basic courses, the mathematical methods of physics, programming a high level language and numerical methods. You will deepen your knowledge in electricity and magnetism as well as statistical physics ? a course where you also will start to apply your knowledgein numerical methods. In a course called computational physics you will learn how to use program packages in the form of numerical libraries to model physical phenomena. During the second year you are able to deepen your knowledge in subjects like theoretical che ...

  8. Master's Programme in Physics

Aim and purpose of the programmePhysics is an empirical science where new ideas and theories on physical phenomena are tested through observations and controlled experiments. In this Master?s programme you will be trained to plan, perform, and to analyze advanced experiments. In physics, the art of identifying crucial and more sensitive experiments to test current theories and to make room for unexpected discoveries, is just as important as to further develop and refine those theories. The programme is a very good preparation for future PhD studies in experimental physics (at our Physics Department there are strong experimental research programmes in atomic, molecular, and cluster physics, quantum optics, superconductivity, and in nuclear and particle physics). In addition, the thorough training with instrumentation and measuring procedures is an excellent preparation for front line development work in industry.ContentThere are three compulsory courses (Programming and Computer Science for Physicists, Statistical methods in physics, and Physical measuring techniques) during the first year. In addition, you will have to choose two courses among Atomic Physics, Molecular Physics I, Nuclear physics, Elementary Particle Physics, Optics and Laser Physics, and Condensed Matter Physics I, and one of Analytical Mechanics, Electrodynamics I, Quantum Mechanics III, and Statistical physics I. During the first and the second year you will specialize in a particular branch of modern experimental and instrumental physics thro ...
