The European Qualifications Framework (EQF) is a translation tool that helps communication and comparison between qualifications systems in Europe. Its eight common European reference levels are described in terms of learning outcomes: knowledge, skills and competences. This allows any national qualifications systems, national qualifications frameworks (NQFs) and qualifications in Europe to relate to the EQF levels. Learners, graduates, providers and employers can use these levels to understand and compare qualifications awarded in different countries and by different education and training systems.

    Goals - knowledge, understanding and skills On completion of study the following criteria shall be fulfilled: Knowledge and understanding- That the students possess extensive and in-depth understanding of main theories, principles, concepts and of the latest findings available within their specific field of study or profession. The knowledge shall be more in-depth than that acquired at cycle 1 and 2.- That the students have contributed important innovation to the field of study in the form of new knowledge or significant adaptation, innovative utilisation or interpretation of existing knowledge.   2. Earth Sciences, Doctorate

    Type of knowledge The student possesses knowledge and understanding acquired from research carried out on an individual basis. The student's research findings shall contribute in a significant way to the development of the relevant field of study. The student shall have initiated new knowledge, and its interpretation, with research which measures up to reviews and critique of other scholars in the relevant field. Knowledge, skills andcompetences On completion of doctoral studies the student should have fulfilled the following criteria in addition to those fulfilled at the former level: 1. Knowledge 1.1.  The student has acquired extensive and deep understanding of the main theories, principles, concepts and the most recent findings within a selected area of Earth Sciences.     1. Knowledge and understanding 1.1. Students have a clear understanding and extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of history, the most important historical theories and concepts and the most recent historical knowledge. Students' understanding and knowledge is deeper and more detailed than that required at lower levels of study. 1.2. Students have a solid understanding and profound knowledge of their speciality within the field. 1.3. Students have made significant contributions to the discipline, whether in the form of new knowledge or original use and interpretation of existing knowledge. 1.4. Students have a good understanding of what scientific research entails, both theories and accepted views on its nature and ideas and conventions regarding its ethics. 1.5.     Definition A three-year theoretical or experimental research-based postgraduate programme of studies in geology at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland. The programme provides at least 180 ECTS units of credit and qualifies for the degree of philosophiae doctor, PhD. Entrance requirements are a research-based MS degree or a comparable qualification.  The scope of the research project shall be 180 ECTS units.     Definition A three-year academic and applied research-oriented graduate programme in industrial engineering at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Iceland. The programme is 210 credits and comprises at least 30 credits in courses and 180 credits in a research project. Admission requirements are a research oriented MS degree or equivalent. Graduates from related disciplines can be admitted on fulfilling supplementary requirements. Knowledge, competence and skillsOn completion of the doctoral examination the student can demonstrate knowledge, skills and competence as detailed below:1. Knowledge and understanding: 1.1.
