Course Information

The undergraduate programme in Anthropology at ISCTE-IUL offers students a comprehensive overview of the most striking themes in contemporary societies. This course aims to provide students with theoretical and methodological training in the field of Social or Cultural Anthropology and in applying acquired competences, with general knowledge of the world's main ethnographic contexts and knowledge required for eventual access to the 2nd cycle. In particular, the degree provides a solid background in the following areas: intercultural relations and ethnocentrism as central political and cultural themes in contemporary times; in-depth knowledge of different ethnographic contexts; familiarity with the main theoretical contributions of the discipline and their methods; contact with the main application fields of anthropological knowledge.

The programme is taught by a highly qualified faculty and has regular collaborations from teachers and researchers from other national and international institutions of higher education, such as the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brown University, University of California - Berkeley, the Indian Institute of Technology and the Universitat Virgili i Rovi. This teacher exchange allows them to introduce students to the various specialties of Anthropology.

ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) is a public university established in 1972. The School of Social and Human Sciences has a corpus of highly qualified and experienced teachers and researchers, and offers a diverse set of university courses at the graduate and post-graduate levels, covering the fields of Psychology, Anthropology, and Political Economy, as well Development Studies and Legal Sciences.

Have successfully completed secondary school or have an equivalent qualification 

Have completed one of the following university entrance exams (central exams prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science): History; or Mathematics; or Portuguese Language

Admission Procedure: 

Applications are done through the national admission contest (concurso nacional de acesso) organized by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGES), or through special higher education contests. For more informations please check DGES website (in portuguese).

Grants: 

There are some institutions in Portugal that give scholarships to international students and it is advisable that applicants confirm every year whether these grants are available and the eligibility terms: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; Foundation for the Sciences and Technology; Fulbright Commission; Instituto Camões; Luso-American Development Foundation; Fundação Oriente.

Located: Near Entrecampos.

By Train:

- Exit the station Entrecampos on Av. da República;

- Walk approximately 250m towards the Entre Campos roundabout;

- At the roundabout, turn left (Av. das Forças Armadas), go up approximately 150m in the Sete Rios direction and you will find the entrance to the ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon on your right.

By Carris bus:

Take the bus number 32, 54 or 55;

- Get off at the stop on the Av. das Forças Armadas, opposite to the "castle" of the Faculty of Pharmacy;

- Descend the avenue approximately 50m. The entrance to the ISCTE-IUL is located on your left.

By Subway:

Exit the station Entrecampos on Av. da República;

- Walk approximately 150m towards the Entre Campos roundabout;

- At the roundabout, turn left (Av. das Forças Armadas), go up approximately 150m in the Sete Rios direction and you will find the entrance to the ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon on your right.

Special arrangements:

The ISCTE-IUL University Residence meets some of the accommodation needs of its visiting students and teachers who have so far only been served by the private accommodation market all over Lisbon. The residence is located at Pátio das Comendadeiras, Calçada das Lages, Santos-o-Novo. This area is served by buses that travel around a large city area, and go to important central areas, such as Terreiro do Paço, Marquês de Pombal, Rato, Saldanha, etc.

There is a study centre for students in Lisbon, Ágora, near the Tagus River and not far from de Cais do Sodré railway station. This centre has study rooms, graphic design services, computers and a bar.
