  2. Master's Programme in Meteorology and Oceanography

    Objectives: The Master's Program in Meteorology and Oceanography provides comprehensive insight into the forces that control the movements of the atmosphere and the ocean including sea ice; central physical processes in the atmosphere and the ocean; the interaction between sea, sea ice and atmosphere; weather forecast, the cycling of nutrients and carbon in the ocean; and regional and global climate and climate change. The aim of the program is to provide insight into Earth's physical environment with specialisation in one or more of the atmosphere, ocean and sea ice components. Content: The foundation of the study is the understanding of both the physical and the mathematical description of central atmospheric and oceanographic phenomena. For this, measurements, experiments, theory and numerical modeling are used. Admission to the program requires a thorough background in meteorology, oceanography, mathematics and physics. For meteorology, the program provides the theoretical basis for weather phenomena, the use of numerical models to forecast the development of weather systems, study of boundary layer processes near the sea surface, sea ice or land surface, local weather and climate phenomena and study of atmospheric radiation processes.   3. Master's Programme in Earth Science

    The programme aims to give you as a student a broad general knowledge of geoscience, as well as research skills in your chosen speciality. Candidates generally find employment in the oil industry, within research, or as private or civic consultants. Master's projects range from dealing with theoretical aspects of solid Earth physics to applied geology, and aim to make use of each student's individual skills and background. The course programme and the master's thesis also take advantage of the fact that Western Norway offers a unique environment for different types of field geology, ranging from Quaternary and glacial geology to Precambrian orogenic and magmatic processes. The proximity to the North Sea oil fields, and the access to two ocean going research vessels equipped for marine reflection seismics, mean that you will have excellent opportunities within petroleum research and marine research.   4. Geotechnics and Geohazards (Master's Programme)

    Each year, natural catastrophes due to geological hazards cause countless deaths and extensive damage to the environment and infrastructure worldwide. Geohazards include land-slides, rockslides, avalanches, earthquakes and tsunamis. Many lives could be saved and enormous destruction avoided if people knew more about geohazards forecasting and prevention. The Geotechnical Division at NTNU, together with the International Centre for Geohazards (ICG), works on assessment, prevention and mitigation of geohazards, including risks associated with landslides and mass transport in soil and rock due to rainfall, flooding, earthquakes and human intervention. The MSc programme in Geotechnics and Geohazards (geo-related natural disasters) is a two year lMaster`s degree programme taught in English at NTNU.   6. Geology- master

    Geologists map the long, amazing history of the Earth. Geology is for everyone who wants to find out more about the planet we live on and combine creativity with an understanding of exciting phenomena in our nature. Geology gives an understanding of earthquakes, volcanoes, slides and other natural hazards, climate and green house effect. You can study tectonics and volcanoes, climate change or specialize yourself into interpretation of seismics or sediments which tell a story of how the environment was millions of years ago. The study consists of a Master's Thesis (60 ECTS) and mandatory and optional subjects (60 ECTS). The number of optional subjects varies between the areas of study concentration. One has the option to follow subjects at the University Centre of Svalbard (UNIS) or abroad.
