The Bachelor’s course in Biological Engineering integrates topics related to conventional engineering, projects and the life sciences into a single curriculum structure, allowing students to apply basic sciences and engineering in solving problems involving biological systems, with a deeper understanding of applied biological sciences, including biochemistry and microbiology.
The Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra was created in 1979 when polytechnic education was introduced in Portugal.
We are a public institute of higher education, which is composed of six schools (Coimbra College of Agriculture, Coimbra College of Education, Oliveira do Hospital College of Technology and Management, Coimbra College of Health Technology, Coimbra Institute of Accounting and Administration and Coimbra Institute of Engineering), Social Welfare Services (SAS) and the Central Administration (SC).
As one may deduce from the names of our schools, the Institute has to offer a large variety of studies, which also include cross-border education in partnership with other European institutions of higher education, for both bachelor’s and master degree levels.
Coimbra Institute of Engineering (ISEC), integrated in Polytechnic of Coimbra since 1988, resulted from the conversion of the former Instituto Industrial e Comercial de Coimbra (Coimbra Institute of Commerce and Industry).
Alongside the strong practical dimension of the engineering courses it delivers, which is a particular feature of polytechnic education, ISEC strives to respond to the requirements of the labour market and to the continued scientific and technical advances of Industry.

The Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra possesses halls of residence and canteens located in different parts of the city so as to provide the suitable services to our student population, which is scattered like our schools. We also have to offer the whole community of the IPC a medical clinic with several medical specialties of conventional and complementary medicine, a cardio fitness and weight training gym, a sporting ground, as well as other sporting facilities which we hold in partnership with other entities.
