    There are three multidisciplinary, thematic doctoral programmes at the University of Lapland: 1) Culture-Centred Service Design, 2) Northern Cultures and Natural Resource Politics and 3) Communities and Changing Work.In addition, there is one General Doctoral Programme by the faculties. These programs are coordinated by the Graduate School. The General Doctoral Programme for doctoral candidates follows a variety of discipline-oriented learning paths. The contents of this programme also follow the faculties’ doctoral degree requirements. Students in the General Doctoral Programme can also choose studies from the thematic doctoral programmes. Candidates apply for the General Doctoral Programme or one of the thematic programmes.   3. Doctoral Degree Programme in Educational Sciences (4 yrs)

    The doctoral programme in the Faculty of Education is a multidisciplinary doctoral programme in the educational sciences, providing research training leading to a doctoral degree. A Doctor of Philosophy (Education) is capable of working as an academic researcher and in demanding expert duties in society. An essential objective of the doctoral studies is to adopt a scientific way of thinking, to internalize a good scientific method of work, and to gain mastery of a multitude of research skills. The major subject is chosen when the student files an application to pursue doctoral studies. The major subject in a doctor’s degree can be either education, educational psychology, music education or special education. The Doctoral Programme in Education offers PhD students a multidisciplinary and international working environment. The research training is linked to the faculty’s research groups and focal areas of research. The core areas of research in the Faculty of Education are as follows: 1) Learning and Learning Processes, 2) Teachers, Teaching and Educational Communities,and 3) Values, Ideologies and Social Contexts of Education. A doctoral student takes part in the activities of the research groups and national and international research networks. Doctoral thesis: A doctoral thesis can either be a monograph or consist of a bundle of articles.   4. Doctoral Programme in Education, Doctor of Education / Doctor of Philosophy (Education((4 yrs)

    Kasvatustieteiden tohtoriohjelma•    kasvatustieteen tohtorin tutkinto ja •    filosofian tohtorin (kasvatustiede) tutkinto. Tohtorin tutkintoon sisältyy väitöskirja ja 40 opintopistettä muita tohtoriopintoja. Kasvatustieteen tohtorin tutkintoon hyväksytty voi välitutkintona suorittaa kasvatustieteen lisensiaatintutkinnon, josta muiden opintojen osuus on 20 opintopistettä. Filosofian tohtorin (kasvatustiede) tutkinto on kasvatustieteiden tiedekunnan tarjoama jatkotutkinto niille, joiden maisterin tutkinnon pääaine ei ole kasvatustieteellinen oppiaine. Sen suorittamisessa noudatetaan soveltuvin osin kasvatustieteen tohtorin tutkinnon suorittamisesta annettuja määräyksiä. Filosofian tohtorin tutkintoon hakevalla täytyy olla suoritettuna joko kasvatustieteen perus- ja aineopinnot tai ohjaajan toimesta kirjallisesti todettu vastaavuus. Lisäksi suositellaan, että opiskelija suorittaa opintojensa aikana kasvatustieteellisiä syventäviä opintoja.   8. Doctoral Programme of Education and Society (4 yrs)

    The postgraduate studies in The School of Education are organised under the doctoral programme Education and Society. The doctoral programme contributes to the societally relevant educational research according the strategy of the University of Tampere. The research topics deal with current phenomena of education and society, related to the School’s present and future focus of research, and they are studied from critical viewpoints (see http://www.uta.fi/edu/en/research/focus.html) The School of Education strives for socialising new generation of researchers into the School and the wider academic community through research collaboration as well as other collaborative activities. The research activities will increasingly take place in research groups and thus the doctoral students will be integrated in the groups of the School (http://www.uta.fi/edu/en/research/groups.html).
