Qualification Information

Students will be able to:
(general competences)

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the history of the basic discipline (sociology),
  • developed general and programme-specific (i.e. social science related) literacy (the ability to evaluate and generate social science discourses),
  • autonomously accumulate and apply knowledge and knowledge resources and sources,
  • observe, analyse, synthesise and critically evaluate,
  • undertake self-criticism and supervise their own professional development,
  • work individually and as part of a team,
  • organise their own time and activities,
  • use information technology,
  • express, represent and argue a position in dialogue with an emphasis on the progressive resolution of conflicts,
  • demonstrate learning competence and a capacity for lifelong learning,

(subject-specific competences)

  • resolve specific work problems through the application of scientific methods,
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts within the discipline,
  • analyse fundamental sociological problems and problems connected to the fields covered by individual modules,
  • demonstrate understanding of the methods of critical analysis and the development of theories and apply them to resolve work problems,
  • demonstrate mastery of the research methods, procedures and tools used in the field of the social sciences and apply this knowledge in practice,
  • work successfully in professions where sociological knowledge and skills are necessary, in the business, political and civil sectors,
  • integrate different fields, i.e. demonstrate an interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary social science perspective,
  • respond to the needs and problems of society – poverty and social exclusion, deviance, environmental sustainability, demographic shifts, immigration and emigration, etc., both personally and from the point of view of the community,
  • plan research (quantitative, qualitative, action research).

  • vocational matura in any secondary school programme and an examination in one of the matura subjects (the selected subject may not be a subject which the candidate has already taken in the vocational matura); or
  • school-leaving examination (prior to 1 June 1995) under any four-year secondary school programme.

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).
