The European Qualifications Framework (EQF) is a translation tool that helps communication and comparison between qualifications systems in Europe. Its eight common European reference levels are described in terms of learning outcomes: knowledge, skills and competences. This allows any national qualifications systems, national qualifications frameworks (NQFs) and qualifications in Europe to relate to the EQF levels. Learners, graduates, providers and employers can use these levels to understand and compare qualifications awarded in different countries and by different education and training systems.

    Definition A three to four year theoretical and practical research-based postgraduate programme of studies in biology at the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Iceland. The programme provides at least 180 ECTS units of credit and qualifies for the degree of philosophiae doctor, PhD. Entrance requirements are a research-based MS degree in biology or a comparable qualification. The scope of the research project shall be 180 ECTS units. Doctoral studies are governed by special Faculty regulations.     Definition A three-year academic and applied research-oriented graduate programme in mechanical engineering at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Iceland. The programme is 210 credits and comprises at least 30 credits in courses and 180 credits in a research project. Admission requirements are a research oriented MS degree or equivalent.
