    The Master's programme is based on basic scientific research. During the programme you will gain knowledge and skills in modern genetics and molecular biosciences, which you will expand upon in the field of specialization of your choice. The programme is tightly integrated with the experimental research carried out at the University of Helsinki; in genetics, genomics, biochemistry, structural biology, and cellular and developmental biology. Through combining course units, you will develop a broad-based understanding of the molecules that underpin biological phenomena, and of their interactions and functions at the levels of cells, tissues and organisms.   Courses include a variety of learning environments: seminars, lectures, laboratory work, oral and written presentations, project work in small groups, independent studies and study circles formed by the students. The instruction will utilise digital learning environments. These diverse teaching methods require active participation from you. The programme will develop your ability to search, structure and present new information, as well as to draw conclusions. You will learn about the principles and methods of research during laboratory exercises, in research groups and while writing your Master’s thesis.   2. Maisterihaku, Biokemia, Biokemian maisteriohjelma, filosofian maisteri (2v)

    Teaching in the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine of the University of Oulu is based on the research work done in the faculty. Course teachers are also active in research and all researchers of the faculty teach on our courses.   MSc studies are planned such that students have maximal possibilities to do practical research work in laboratories using state-of-the-art research facilies and equipment. Upon completing the MSc degree students have a minimum of 9 months experience in practical research laboratory work. Many students complete parts of the practical work, for example training or thesis work, outside Oulu in other internationally recognized research groups or biochemical laboratories or biotech companies. Both study lines offer flexibility for students to specialize in the aspects which they believe will most benefit their future career, including courses from the outside of the faculty, while at the same time having timetables which allow completion of the degree within two years.   Consistent with our goal to provide the highest-level of education and research through the systematic recruitment of experts from Finland and aboard all of the teaching on our MSc study programmes is in English. ...

  3. Molecular Medicine, double degree, Master's Programme in Biochemistry, Master of Science (2y)

    Students from Oulu need to complete minimum of 30 ECTS studies (one term) and maximum of 60 ECTS (two terms) in Ulm, and vice versa. The first year autumn term is always in the home university. The term in the other university may be either the first year spring or the second year autumn. In the former case the pro gradu thesis is done in the second year autumn (and the first year spring courses are done in the second year spring) and in the latter case the pro gradu thesis is done in the second year spring. MSc studies are planned such that students have maximal possibilities to do practical research work in laboratories using state-of-the-art research facilies and equipment. Upon completing the MSc degree students have a minimum of 9 months experience in practical research laboratory work.   5. Ekologian ja evoluutiobiologian maisteriohjelma, filosofian maisteri (2 v)

    Ekologian ja evoluutiobiologian osastolla osaston opetus- ja tutkimusaiheet ulottuvat geeneistä uhanalaisiin lajeihin ja Suomen aarniometsistä globaaleihin ympäristöongelmiin. Ekologian ja evoluutiobiologian opintoihin sisältyy ekologian, genetiikan ja evoluutiobiologian opintoja. Opintoihin sisältyy myös soveltavia kursseja, kuten luonnonsuojelubiologiaa, maasto-opetusta ja lajintuntemusta. Ekologian ja evoluutiobiologian oppiaineessa opiskellaan molekyyli-, käyttäytymis-, populaatio- ja yhteisöekologiaa; eläinten, kasvien ja sienten ekologiaa; evoluutiobiologiaa; populaatio- ja luonnonsuojelugenetiikkaa; eliömaantiedettä; luonnonsuojelubiologiaa, metsien monimuotoisuutta ja monikäyttöä, riistaekologiaa sekä lajien ja luontotyyppien tuntemusta.     Kandidaatin tutkinnon pääaine on biolääketiede. Farmakologia ja toksikologia ja kemiallinen biologia ovat keskeisiä sivuaineita.     The Biomedical Imaging programme is part of the larger ensemble of MSc programmes in Biomedical Sciences (www.biomedicine.fi). These programmes together provide the basic courses in transferrable skills: languages, bioinformatics and statistics. Theoretical and practical courses of the programme will be given by the two universities in Turku (University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University). Application areas of the programme include cell and molecular biology, structural biology, nanotechnology and biomaterials research, pharmacology, and patient care and diagnostics.
