The European Qualifications Framework (EQF) is a translation tool that helps communication and comparison between qualifications systems in Europe. Its eight common European reference levels are described in terms of learning outcomes: knowledge, skills and competences. This allows any national qualifications systems, national qualifications frameworks (NQFs) and qualifications in Europe to relate to the EQF levels. Learners, graduates, providers and employers can use these levels to understand and compare qualifications awarded in different countries and by different education and training systems.

    Type of qualification This qualification is a vocational training preparation scheme which is located in the transitional area between general schooling and vocational education and training. Training provision is aimed at fostering individual improvement in capability for entering training and at aiding career choice decisions on the part of young people. It does not lead to a vocational qualification.   The prevocational training year is a training course at vocational schools which is normally offered on a full-time basis and which prepares young people for the requirements of vocational training. When aligned to level 1 of the DQR, the prevocational training year is categorised as general education. It is partially based on the first year of training in a training occupation in terms of theory and practice.   10. Full-time vocational school (general education school leaving certificate obtained on completion of grade 10 at Realschule or, under certain circumstances, at other lower secondary school types)

    Type of qualification This qualification is a vocational school degree acquiring the intermediate secondary school leaving certificate. Attendance at full-time vocational school for the purpose of acquiring the intermediate secondary school leaving certificate combines cross-occupational and occupationally related competences within the respective specialism and leads to the intermediate secondary school leaving certificate. Attendance at full-time vocational school for a period of two years enables young people to acquire initial occupationally related skills and competences within the respective occupational field, in which experience and learning situations to support their individual learning process are opened up. Such a full-time school-based course of training imparts basic knowledge and skills which impart occupational competence. Acquisition of the competences of company-based training takes place in workshops, laboratories or learning offices.
