    In Latvia, the pre-school education for five- and six-year-old children is compulsory. Primary and lower secondary education is organised as a single structure system (pamatizglītība), beginning at the age of 7 and consisting of nine years of compulsory schooling. Upper secondary education is not compulsory, but the proportion of population with completed upper secondary education is still high.   10. Useful information for students

    Higher education in Latvia is accessible to students holding the equivalent of an upper-secondary school leaving certificate (high school diploma). Enrolment is competitive, based on the average marks achieved in upper secondary school and the results of the national centralized exams. Higher education is partially state-funded, with subsidised study places for students in priority fields, according to national economic development policy. EU students are eligible to compete for subsidized study places, however the subsidies apply only to programmes offered in the official state language which is Latvian.
