  4. Master's Programme in Physical Geography

    The effects of climate changes and natural hazards are problems society must deal with to protect the population and preserve values. In the Master's Programme in Physical Geography we study the exogenous processes that have shaped and shape the landscape, and offer a wide range of master projects. With main focus on Norway, the reasearch group in physical geography at the Department of Geography works with glaciers, natural hazards (floods, storminess, storm floods, snow avalanches etc.), sea level, hydrology, ground water, periglacial features, caves and landscape development related to past and present climate and environmental changes. We use a number of methods including equipment for coring of lakes, access to sediment analyses, and laboratory for GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and RS (Remote Sensing). Our research contribution has great relevance for societal safety and planning related to settlement, transport, water supply, and climate and energy transformation. The objective of the programme is to provide the student with theoretical, methodological and practical skills enabling them to qualify for a Master's degree in Physical Geography.   5. Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences

    The field of Biomedicine has a central role in shaping tomorrow's medicine. The Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences presents a medical approach to physiology and molecular biology and offers you the opportunity to engage in biomedical research and to be an active member of an international research group.   The curriculum starts with a comprehensive exposure to methodological approaches used by scientists with in the field of biomedicine, from molecular and cellular biology, to human physiology and biomedical imaging.   From the very start students are placed in an active research environment and trained in relevant methodology. The theoretical courses focus on understanding cellular and physiological mechanisms, providing knowledge required for understanding human disease mechanisms and for future development of methods, diagnostics and therapies. Throughout the programme students are extensively educated in ethical aspects as well as "soft skills" such as scientific writing and dissemination skills.   6. Master's Programme in Meteorology and Oceanography

    Objectives: The Master's Program in Meteorology and Oceanography provides comprehensive insight into the forces that control the movements of the atmosphere and the ocean including sea ice; central physical processes in the atmosphere and the ocean; the interaction between sea, sea ice and atmosphere; weather forecast, the cycling of nutrients and carbon in the ocean; and regional and global climate and climate change. The aim of the program is to provide insight into Earth's physical environment with specialisation in one or more of the atmosphere, ocean and sea ice components. Content: The foundation of the study is the understanding of both the physical and the mathematical description of central atmospheric and oceanographic phenomena. For this, measurements, experiments, theory and numerical modeling are used. Admission to the program requires a thorough background in meteorology, oceanography, mathematics and physics. For meteorology, the program provides the theoretical basis for weather phenomena, the use of numerical models to forecast the development of weather systems, study of boundary layer processes near the sea surface, sea ice or land surface, local weather and climate phenomena and study of atmospheric radiation processes. Within the Master's Programme in Mathematics, you can choose among the following specialisations, mirroring the four main research groups within pure Mathematics: Algebra: The Master's programme in Algebra gives a general background in mathematics, with special focus on algebra and algebraic geometry.     The master programme in molecular biology provides the candidate with solid and advanced understanding of current topics within this discipline. We conduct research on important biomolecules and their roles in the various life processes including diseases. The candidate can choose a research project among the areas of protein structure and function relationship, signal transduction and regulation in biological systems, and biological computation and bioinformatics .
