  1. Doctoral Degree Programme in Mechanical Engineering (4 yrs)

    Tutkinto-ohjelman tohtoriopintojen tavoitteena on antaa väitöskirjatutkijalle perustutkintoa syvällisemmät tiedot oman oppisuuntansa ajankohtaisista tieteellisistä innovaatioista. Täten hän kykenee työelämään siirtyessään työskentelemään menestyksekkäästi joko teknologiateollisuuden yrityksissä tai teknisissä tutkimuslaitoksissa, sekä edesauttamaan merkittävästi niissä tehtävää tutkimus- ja tuotekehitystyötä. Ensisijaisesti väitöskirjatutkija perehtyy opinnoissaan syvällisesti omaan opintosuuntansa erityisalueen (materiaalitekniikka, valmistustekniikka, koneensuunnittelu ja rakennesuunnittelu) teoreettiseen taustaan ja tutkimusmenetelmiin. Opintojen aikana hän omaksuu myös hyvän tieteellisen tutkimuksen eettisten näkökulmat ja käytännön toimintatavat. Lisäksi tohtorikoulutettava perehtyy tieteellisen toiminnan tuloksien julkaisemiseen ja esittämiseen erilaisissa tieteellisissä julkaisukanavissa. Konetekniikan tutkinto-ohjelman tohtoriopintojen pääaine valitaan joko materiaalitekniikan, valmistustekniikan, konesuunnittelun tai rakennesuunnittelun oppisuunnista opiskeluoikeuden hakemisen yhteydessä. Useimmat tohtoriopiskelijat tekevät väitöskirjaa tutkimusyksikön tutkimushankkeissa, mutta tohtorintutkinnon suorittaminen on myös mahdollista teollisuudessa työskenteleville henkilöille. Konetekniikan alalta valmistuneiden tekniikan tohtoreiden työllistyminen on ollut erittäin hyvä.     The goal of doctoral studies is to provide doctoral students with profound knowledge on latest research results and current innovations in their own field. This enables them to work succesfully in the companies and research institutes. Contents of doctoral studies are planned case-specifically for each student to support these goals.   Doctoral students must familiarize themselves profoundly with theoretical background and research methods of their own field. Ethical aspects and practices of good research are also acquired during the doctoral studies.   5. Doctoral Degree Programme in Educational Sciences (4 yrs)

    The doctoral programme in the Faculty of Education is a multidisciplinary doctoral programme in the educational sciences, providing research training leading to a doctoral degree. A Doctor of Philosophy (Education) is capable of working as an academic researcher and in demanding expert duties in society. An essential objective of the doctoral studies is to adopt a scientific way of thinking, to internalize a good scientific method of work, and to gain mastery of a multitude of research skills. The major subject is chosen when the student files an application to pursue doctoral studies. The major subject in a doctor’s degree can be either education, educational psychology, music education or special education. The Doctoral Programme in Education offers PhD students a multidisciplinary and international working environment. The research training is linked to the faculty’s research groups and focal areas of research.   6. Doctoral Degree Programme in Health Sciences (4 yrs)

    The doctoral degree (PhD) in health sciences in the University of Oulu provides a high level of doctoral education and produces competitive researchers and academic specialists for professional contexts. The Doctoral degree is carried out during four years of full-time studies or six years of part-time studies. Doctoral education includes a dissertation and a public defense, and at least 20 ECTS of postgraduate studies. All candidates draft their own personal study plan (e-HOPS) at the beginning of their education. In the end of their doctoral studies, all doctoral candidates defend their dissertation at a public defense. Doctoral candidates should have a profound knowledge within their specific field, but they also need to have a broad understanding of health sciences. The goal of the studies is to enhance scientific thinking, internalize the principles of good scientific practice and manage a wider range of skills and networking required of researchers. Doctoral candidates conduct their thesis within the research project of the research unit.     Aate- ja oppihistoria: Aate- ja oppihistorian tohtorikoulutuksen tavoite on kouluttaa tutkijoita, jotka ovat päteviä analysoimaan aatteellisia virtauksia ja tieteen kehitystä historiallisessa kontekstissa. Tämä tarkoittaa erityisesti kykyä tulkita ja selittää ajattelutapoja, uskomusjärjestelmiä ja tieteellisiä käytäntöjä sekä niiden muutoksia ajallisessa, paikallisessa ja käsitteellisessä kehyksessä. Lähtökohtana on ajatus, että analyyttinen aate- ja oppihistoriallinen tieto on avain nykymaailman ja tulevaisuuden ajatteluvirtausten ja tieteen ymmärtämiseen.     In the doctoral programme of Mathematical sciences, the PhD student is carrying out scientific research whose results are to be presented in the PhD thesis. In addition, the student is participating courses, seminars and other studies that are relevant for the research field. The PhD student can join a research group e.g. in one of the following fields: Mathematical analysis and its applications, Number theory, Information theory, Statistical models and Data-analysis.   10. Doctor of Education, postgraduate degree, (lisenciate, doctor) 240 credits

    There are three multidisciplinary, thematic doctoral programmes at the University of Lapland: 1) Culture-Centred Service Design, 2) Northern Cultures and Natural Resource Politics and 3) Communities and Changing Work.In addition, there is one General Doctoral Programme by the faculties. These programs are coordinated by the Graduate School. The General Doctoral Programme for doctoral candidates follows a variety of discipline-oriented learning paths.
