Syventävien opintojen alussa perehdytään kaikilla erikoistumislinjoilla alan keskeisiin tutkimusmenetelmiin. Geologian opintoihin kuuluu myös intensiivistä pienryhmäopetusta harjoitustyökursseilla, ohjattua laboratoriotyöskentelyä erikoiskursseilla tai räätälöityjä lyhytkursseja ulkomaisten ja kotimaisten asiantuntijoiden johdolla. Sokerina pohjalla ovat kuitenkin erilaiset kenttäkurssit, opintomatkat, tutkimusmatkat ja ekskursiot. Niillä päästään tutustumaan opiskeltaviin aiheisiin niiden luonnollisessa ympäristössä ja saadaan kokemuksia, joista riittää kerrottavaa.

The Department of Geosciences and Geography offers the following programmes in English:

The Palaeobiology and Palaeoclimatology program deals with the history of life on Earth under changing climates and environments. Research in the division of geology focuses on climate, vegetation and faunas of the Cenozoic, the last 65 million years. The special focus areas during the recent decades have been the evolution of Northern Hemisphere climates and plant-eating mammals of the Miocene (23–5 million years ago) and the history of global climate, vegetation and fauna during the last glacial and the last few millennia.

The Solid Earth Geophysics program requires physics as a minor subject. This line of specialisation gives you the expertise to approach global geological research problems and practical applications quantitatively using methods from the field of physics. In this program, you will learn, among other things, the use of modern geophysical measurement methods in prospecting, environmental research, and the study of the structure and development of the Earth. The skills and methods of modeling and data analysis you will learn are necessary in many research and development tasks in research facilities and firms in the field.
