The student's research findings shall contribute in a significant way to the development of the relevant field of study. The student shall have initiated new knowledge, and its interpretation, with research which measures up to reviews and critique of other scholars in the relevant field. Knowledge, skills andcompetences On completion of doctoral studies the student should have fulfilled the following criteria in addition to those fulfilled at the former level: 1. Knowledge 1.1.  The student has acquired extensive and deep understanding of the main theories, principles, concepts and the most recent findings within a selected area of Earth Sciences.     DefinitionA three to four year theoretical and practical research-based postgraduate programme of studies in chemistry at the Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Iceland. The programme provides 180 to 240 ECTS units of credit and qualifies for the degree of phiosophiae doctor, PhD. Entrance requirements are a research-based MS-degree or a comparable qualification.     Knowledge: On completion of the study program the student shall be able to: Demonstrate a deep and thorough knowledge in a chosen specialised area of ecological modelling which is the subject of active research. The student understands the place of his/her specialised subject within the general research field of ecological modelling and knows its connections with other specialised areas. Contribute to new knowledge by extending ecological models and adapting models from other fields. Discuss recent research in ecological modelling. Skills: On completion of the study program the student shall: Have full mastery over a chosen specialised area of ecological modelling. Be able to use computer software and statistical methods to solve general ecological modelling projects.
