  5. Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences

The field of Biomedicine has a central role in shaping tomorrow's medicine. The Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences presents a medical approach to physiology and molecular biology and offers you the opportunity to engage in biomedical research and to be an active member of an international research group.   The curriculum starts with a comprehensive exposure to methodological approaches used by scientists with in the field of biomedicine, from molecular and cellular biology, to human physiology and biomedical imaging.   From the very start students are placed in an active research environment and trained in relevant methodology. The theoretical courses focus on understanding cellular and physiological mechanisms, providing knowledge required for understanding human disease mechanisms and for future development of methods, diagnostics and therapies. Throughout the programme students are extensively educated in ethical aspects as well as "soft skills" such as scientific writing and dissemination skills. The major master project can be conducted in basic or translational research groups at the Faculty of Medicine.   We encourage all students to go on exchange to our international partners. We are part of a Nordic network (NordBioMedNet) with the following universities; the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), the Karolinska Insitutet (Sweden), the University of Turku and the University of Eastern Finland (both Finland). ...

  7. Master's Programme in Molecular Biology

The master programme in molecular biology provides the candidate with solid and advanced understanding of current topics within this discipline. We conduct research on important biomolecules and their roles in the various life processes including diseases. The candidate can choose a research project among the areas of protein structure and function relationship, signal transduction and regulation in biological systems, and biological computation and bioinformatics . The research project is often part of a larger project where the candidate collaborates in groups with researchers. Through project work the student will learn how to work both independently and collaboratively in the laboratory. The candidate will learn to evaluate own results in relation to the hypothesis being tested. In addition, the candidate will develop skills to present own results, both orally and in writing. The student will also learn how to read and evaluate relevant literature. In addition to the practical work, other requirements include both mandatory and elective courses. ...

  10. Bachelor of Science in Biology

Biology is the knowledge of all living organisms, from the tiniest molecules constituting the building blocks of cells, to entire ecosystems. Our future and life quality depend on this knowledge for sustainable utilization and conservation of living resources. Why are some individuals more sexually attractive than others? What mechanisms make living organisms resist bacteria, viruses and parasites? How are seabirds influenced by uncontrolled oil spills? These are some of the questions that biology seeks to answer. In the study programme you will be explained how global climate variations will influence nature, why dinosaurs never really got extinct and why some individuals more sexually attractive than others. You will achieve knowledge about physiology, genomics, scientific methods, biodiversity, chemical mechanisms, as well as ecological and evolutionary processes. About the programme: The teaching language is English. This study programme provides basic knowledge in biological topics including ecology, evolution, biodiversity, genetics as well as basic chemistry, mathematics and statistics. In some courses, the students participate in lab and field activities. The last year of the program is more flexible so that students have an opportunity for some specializing according to their interests. Advanced level elective courses are offered, including bachelor's thesis, 15 weeks of work experience in Norway or abroad, a semester or two abroad at a partner University, or courses at the University Centre in Sval ...
