  2. Master Programme in Humanitarian Action and Conflict

What is humanitarian action? In what ways are humanitarian emergencies intensified and changed by conflict? What factors define a humanitarian disaster? What laws and moral principles steer humanitarian interventions? The Master Programme in Humanitarian Action and Conflict is aimed at those who are interested in humanitarian work both in Europe and the world at large. Humanitarian work transcends boundaries, as is testified by fact that the largest humanitarian organisations work in many different countries and that humanitarian professionals come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Both natural disasters and conflicts need technical experts from areas such as medicine, logistics, sanitation and psycho-social care. In addition there is a need for project managers, administrators and policy developers to realise and shape humanitarian response. When humanitarian professionals face severe challenges, such as the conflict in Syria, there is also a need for a multi-disciplinary approach in order to understand the causes of the suffering. There is otherwise a risk that the humanitarian response will be ineffective and futile. This Master's programme at Uppsala University is especially suited for those who want a better understanding of humanitarian work in conflict situations and who are interested in working with the great humanitarian challenges of today. ...

  3. Master's Programme in Public Health, Health Equality

About the programme This Master's programme in public health science has a specific focus on Health equality, e.g. on methods for studying causes and dynamics of health inequalities as well as models for levelling out potential inequities. The purpose of the programme is to prepare students for successful participation in strategic and practical public health work within regional, national and/or international institutions as well as for further studies at postgraduate level. Public health science is a multidisciplinary field that places questions about health and disease in a social context. Its breadth implies that there is a need for a deeper understanding of specific themes, in this case the mechanisms behind inequality and inequity in health. Public health science focuses on the importance of society's organization and other structural factors (political, economic and cultural) for the health status of populations, including studies of the social determinants of health, e.g. income and educational level, discrimination, access to healthcare and so forth. Based on this, the discipline increasingly deals with questions about whether the distribution of health within a population is equal and fair, that is, if variations in the health of different groups can be referred to structural factors and therefore are possible to change. Included in the field is also formulation of policy, interventions and evaluations that addresses identified health problems and gaps. Work areas Work opportunities for Public health ...
