  1. Master Programme in Biology- Ecology and Conservation

The Master Programme in Biology is a first-class programme where you create your own profile. The broad range of courses in biology and biotechnology makes it possible for you to improve your personal competitiveness in the job market by obtaining the required theoretical subject depth together with practical skills in, for example, communication. The Master Programme in Biology offers many alternative course combinations, and there are a number of specialisations preparing you for research or professions outside the academy. You can also choose to take courses outside your own specialisation. The specialisations are: Cell and Molecular Biology Ecology and Conservation Environmental Toxicology Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Evolution Biology (MEME) Evolutionary Biology Genetic and Molecular Plant Science Immunology and Microbiology Limnology - Ecology and Environment of Inland Waters NABiS - Nordic Master in Biodiversity and Systematics The Master Programme in Biology has a strong international character, and all courses are held in English. The programme leads to a Master of Science (120 credits) with Biology as the main field of study. ...

  4. Master's Programme in Environmental Science- Atmosphere, Biogeochemistry and Climate

This program will give you the environmental science perspective on grand challenges of our society such as air and water quality, and climate change. You will get fundamental knowledge of the composition and functioning of the environmental compartments: the atmosphere ? the freshwater and ocean ? and the land systems. It also gives the earth and environmental systems understanding of how these compartments interact through transport, energy balances, the water and carbon cycles. A central part of this program is to gain a deeper understanding of how anthropogenic perturbations affect these natural systems. The first course ?Large Scale Challenges to Climate and Environment? (15 credits) will present the sources, effects and mitigation options for key challenges. The second half of the first semester is a course on ?Atmosphere, Biogeosphere, and Climate Change? (15 credits). This is then followed by a semester of elective courses in Biogeochemistry, Atmospheric and Climate Sciences and related disciplines, and a semester of optional courses. Finally, you will perform a Master?s degree project (thesis), in close association with one of the many strong research groups in our department. ...

  5. Master's Programme in Environmental Science- Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry

The program in Environmental Science focusing on Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry will give you knowledge about sources, release, emissions, transport, fate, uptake, effects, and regulatory aspects of chemical contaminants. You will start by learning about the global challenges in the world. Then follows courses in contaminant modeling, toxicology, risk assessment and field sampling. During the second year, you can broaden your knowledge or go more in depth into chemistry. Finally you do a Master?s thesis of at least 30 credits. ...

  6. Master's Programme in Ecology and Biodiversity

Biological diversity on Earth is under threat and the rapid extinction of species and populations is one of the major problems that mankind face today. Differences between species can be understood in the light of evolution, partly as a result of adaptation to different environments through natural selection, and partly as a result of random events such as climate change. Ecology is the study of which factors affect the distribution and diversity of species, and how species are adapted to the world around them through competition, predation and mutualism. This includes studies of individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems, in an attempt to understand the complicated networks of relationships between species, their environment and the climate. Humans today influence the conditions for many species and we need to understand factors and processes that cause biodiversity to decrease and be lost. The Master's Programme in Ecology and Biodiversity provides wide-ranging opportunities for students to tailor their education to obtain the profile desired. A final degree project in ecology is compulsory, as are the courses in Experimental Design and Science in Biological Research and Investigation. These courses are taken in parallel with the degree project. The courses Evolutionary Ecology and Biodiversity: Patterns and Processes are compulsory parts of the programme. The student can choose further courses in, for example, Interactions in Ecological Socities and Molecular Ecology. It is also possible to includ ...

  7. Master's Programme in Social-ecological resilience for sustainable development

The 2-year Master?s Programme Social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development aims to enhance students? knowledge of the complex interactions between social and ecological dynamics at different scales; particularly ecosystem management and governance in the context of change and uncertainty. Students are introduced to different research approaches and methods for studying coupled social and ecological systems. The aim is to provide students with insights into problem-driven transdisciplinary environmental research. The Master?s programme consists of one year of courses, including the option of a traineeship, and one year spent doing a Master?s thesis. The four mandatory courses are designed with an emphasis on resilience, and define the challenges we face today and reflect on how resilience thinking can be applied to social-ecological systems to solve real-life problems. The four compulsory courses are:? Social-ecological systems: challenges and approaches? Systems Theory and Resilience Thinking? Governing and managing social-ecological systems? Resilience reflections and applicationsStudents? theses are mainly incorporated in on-going research projects and are all related to one of the research themes at the Stockholm Resilience Centre. We strongly encourage students to publish their research in peer-reviewed journals. We want to attract top international and Swedish students and ensure that they are embedded in the research life at the Centre. Integrating students, post docs and senior researchers is im ...

  8. Master's Programme in Ethology

Ethology is the branch of biological sciences that examines the behaviour of animals. The Master's programme provides a broad insight into the complete subject. You will study how animals communicate and solve conflicts, the social structure of animal communities, pair formation and reproduction in animals, and how competition and co-operation can develop. How behaviour develops during the life of the individual and how learning and experience influence patterns of behaviour is discussed. Moreover, the genetic background, evolution (both at the micro- and macroevolutionary scale) and function of behaviour are discussed. Knowledge of ethology is important in many fields of biology. These fields include ecology, evolutionary biology, neurobiology and conservation biology. Ethology also has applications outside of the scientific sphere. For instance, one important application for ethology concerns the requirements of ethical treatment of animals and animal well-being. The programme includes lectures, seminars and practical studies in the natural world, either in a laboratory or at our research station. The following courses are compulsory within the programme: Ethology II (7.5 hp), Animal cognition (7.5 hp), Human behaviour: Biology and Culture (7.5 hp), and a degree project in ethology covering 30-60 hp. In addition, selected and freely selected courses of a minimum of 22.5 hp are included. The Master's Programme in Ethology aims to provide the background required for continued work within those parts of society ...
