  1. Applied Statistics, MAS

    The MAS degree, Master of Applied Statistics, is an interdisciplinary study at the University of Iceland. The study is 90 ECTS and on completion the student is entitled to the MAS degree. Students take 60 ECTS in courses and a 30 ECTS project. The goal of the MAS study is for the student to know and understand the basic concepts of modern statistics and be able to apply these to projects in other fields.  1.     Knowledge: Students who graduate with an MAS degree have extensive knowlede and  understanding of applied statistics, as used in various fields. This involves: 1.1. The student knows the aspect of statistics which form a basis for modern statistics: experimental design, data collection and storage, simulation, generalized linear models and survival analysis. 1.2. The student knows selected aspects of an associated field (if applicable), which combine to make a basis for continuing in that field. 1.3. The student has knowledge and understanding of the uses of statistics through solving and studying applied projects and with modeling in scientific applications.  1.4. The student has basic knowledge of using computers, including programming, at least in R.   1.5. The student knows selected statistical topics which are more extensive than those listed in item 1.1. 2.     Skills: Students who graduate with an MAS degree can use statistical methods in a logical manner to solve applied projects using existing software and using their own programming.  This involves: 2.1.     Definition The PhD degree in mathematics is a three-year course of studies at the Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Iceland. The course is at least 180 ECTS and on completion the student is entitled to the degree of philosophiae doctor. The main part of the course is a research project worth 180 ECTS under the direction of a supervisor. The student writes a thesis which testifies to a wide and thorough knowledge in a chosen field and contains new and important results. Type of knowledge Advanced knowledge, theoretical and practical, focusing in depth on the latest research advances in a specialised field.     Definition The MS-degree in mathematics is a two year course of studies at the Faculty of Physical Sciences, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland. The course consists of 120 ECTS and on its completion the student is entitled to the degree of magister scientiarum. The entrance requirement is a BSc degree in mathematics or its equivalent with a minimum mark of 65%. The course of studies consists of taught courses and a dissertation. The latter 60 or 90 ECTS.
