  1. Doctoral Degree Programme in Dentistry (4 yrs)

    A doctoral degree consists of general and transferable skills courses, field-specific studies and doctoral thesis work. The purpose of general and transferable skills courses is to introduce the student to the foundation of scientific research and research methods, scientific thinking and writing, the ethical foundation of scientific research work. Field-specific studies are aimed to give the in depth understanding about his/her own field of research and research methods. Field-specific studies can include following: national and international scientific courses for postgraduates, seminar, methods courses, courses related to his/her own field of research, scientific writing courses, working in research institutions, and in some cases a completed specialist degree/education in dentistry. The duration of the doctoral training corresponds to four years of full-time study. The degree includes research work for the thesis, the publication and the public defense of the thesis, and, depending on the discipline, at least 20 ECTS credits of general and transferable skills courses, field-specific studies courses and/or other research-related activities. The goals of the studies are to deepen the student's knowledge of his/her own field, and to develop his/her general knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career.   3. Doctoral Degree Programme in Health Sciences (4 yrs)

    The doctoral degree (PhD) in health sciences in the University of Oulu provides a high level of doctoral education and produces competitive researchers and academic specialists for professional contexts. The Doctoral degree is carried out during four years of full-time studies or six years of part-time studies. Doctoral education includes a dissertation and a public defense, and at least 20 ECTS of postgraduate studies. All candidates draft their own personal study plan (e-HOPS) at the beginning of their education. In the end of their doctoral studies, all doctoral candidates defend their dissertation at a public defense. Doctoral candidates should have a profound knowledge within their specific field, but they also need to have a broad understanding of health sciences. The goal of the studies is to enhance scientific thinking, internalize the principles of good scientific practice and manage a wider range of skills and networking required of researchers. Doctoral candidates conduct their thesis within the research project of the research unit.     The work load of the doctoral degree is approximately 4 years of fulltime work. This consists of postgraduate studies, doctoral research and a public defence of the doctoral thesis. The licentiate degree in health sciences consists of postgraduate studies and a licentiate thesis. One can also pursue academic postgraduate degrees part-time. Doctor of Health Sciences consists of postgraduate studies of 60 credits, and a doctoral thesis and a public defence of the doctoral thesis of 180 credits (a total of 240 credits). Licentiate of Health Sciences consists of postgraduate studies of 60 credits and a licentiate thesis of 90 credits (a total of 150 credits).  Doctor of Health Sciences and Licentiate in Health Sciences are pursued in the Doctoral Programme in Nursing Science (DPNurs).
