Course Information

Knowledge, ability and skills
At the conclusion of the program, the student can demonstrate knowledge, skills and ability as stated below:
Knowledge and Understanding:

On completion of the LL.M. in Polar Law, the student shall:

  • Be able to explain the legal frameworks and other standard-setting and norm-enforcing systems, and the major issues in law and related disciplines pertaining to the Polar regions.
  • Be able to describe the interests and concerns of the peoples who live or otherwise secure their livelihood in the Polar regions, expressing sensitivity to the different interests of different groups.
  • Be able to explain the legal responses to disputes and tensions pertaining to the different interests in the Polar regions, with particular regard to human rights, governance, self-determination, the environment, law of the sea, transport and security, and dispute settlement.

Type of Knowledge:

On completion of the LL.M. in Polar Law, the student shall:

  • Be able to explain contemporary issues in Polar law both theoretically and practically, taking into account the most recent developments in law and the most recent academic literature.
  • Display sound knowledge and a critical theoretical attitude to the subject of his or her LL.M. thesis, reflecting the most recent academic literature on the subject.

Practical Skills:

On completion of the LL.M. in Polar Law, the student shall:

  • Be able to make autonomous assessments of research questions, autonomously select suitable research methods, and present findings of research outcomes in Polar law.
  • Be able to maintain his or her knowledge of Polar law, acquire further knowledge and ensure that his or her knowledge is kept up to date (for example, by finding and using legal sources and relevant academic writings).
  • Be able to apply social and ethical considerations to academic and professional activities pertaining to the Polar regions.
  • Be able to independently formulate, develop and complete projects in Polar Law and put them in context.
  • Be able to work in groups, deciding how to allocate research tasks, agreeing on outcomes and preparing arguments to support group findings.

Theoretical Skills:

On completion of the LL.M. in Polar Law, the student shall:

  • Be able to find, interpret and apply the sources of law pertaining to the Polar regions, such as international law, the law of the sea, and the law of international organisations.
  • Be able to identify and assess theoretical, practical, legal and social issues pertaining to the Polar regions.
  • Be able to utilise his or her research skills, knowledge and understanding of law and his or her legal interpretation skills to tackle new and unfamiliar legal issues and situations pertaining to the Polar regions.
  • Be able to critically evaluate legal frameworks, normative systems and other processes (both real and hypothetical) pertaining to the Polar regions.
  • Be able to recognise innovation and developments in Polar Law, identify novel legal issues and claims and assess significant changes of direction in legal norms and other norms.

Communication Skills and Information Literacy:

On completion of the LL.M. in Polar Law, the student shall:

  • Be able to communicate both orally and in writing, clearly and unambiguously in English, theoretical and practical legal information to specialist and non-specialist audiences, individually or in cooperation with others.

Learning Skills:

On completion of the LL.M. in Polar Law, the student shall:

  • Have the necessary learning and research skills, work methods and autonomy to undertake further study at cycle 3, level 5 (doctorate degree) in Polar law and related fields.
  • Be prepared for graduate employment in fields related to Polar Law.
