Course Information

The degree studies of 120 ECTS comprise of basic studies, advanced studies and elective (supplementary) studies (87 ECTS), advanced practical training (3 ECTS), and the MSc thesis (30 ECTS).

The students form the supplementary studies module themselves and it can include another option’s core courses (e.g. electronics design, computer engineering), forming a module of minor studies. Apart from engineering studies, this individual, self-planned module may contain science and commercial studies to complement the degree. University courses above elementary studies are acceptable. Furthermore, this module includes Finnish language studies as the number of these is limited to 10 ECTS.

Students must draft a personal study plan (PSP), approved by degree program representatives, during their first autumn term and before starting any elective courses available.

The programme offers relevant skills and core knowledge of the latest methods, tools and technologies related to design of wireless systems and networks. It covers the subjects on radio access technologies (spread spectrum, CDMA, HSPA, LTE-A, OFDM, UWB, MIMO, cognitive radio), communications networks, protocols, communications signal processing, radio channels, antennas, RF engineering & components & measurements, RF-IC design, information theory & coding, and several electronics design, DSP, computer engineering, and Finnish language courses as elective studies.

You will get solid background in the dynamic field of wireless communications. The skills gained offer a training that answers to the demands of electronics industry. Depending field of specialization (study option) a student is able to

  • design bandwidth-efficient, high-capacity, low-latency wireless communications systems and networks like 5G and beyond
  • use the basic methods of the information theory to calculate capacity limits and evaluate the realization of the planning before starting the phases of detailed system planning and optimization, prototype construction and testing
  • analyze system performance of various modulation methods in the case of AWGN and fading channels, and perform design & simulations with the aid of CAD tools, and MATLAB
  • design equalization, coding, massive MIMO diversity methods and smart antennas for performance and capacity improvement
  • design impedance matching, power & small-signal amplifiers using radio and microwave frequency components like micro-strips, mixing circuits, power splitters/combiners
  • design ICs for 5G, IoT and smart sensor applications
  • define system parameters for physical link and network layers to facilitate mobility control, and adaptive and dynamic resource management and allocation
  • use methods of DSP and statistical signal processing to design algorithms for linear and non-linear filters, equalizers, multi-user detectors, and interference cancellation
