Type of qualification

This qualification is a vocational education and training at a vocational school governed by federal state law. Attendance at full-time vocational school for a period of two years imparts the necessary qualifications for the exercising of a state recognised training occupation under federal state law. This is a full-time school-based training course with a minimum duration of two years. Teaching encompasses a cross-occupational, an occupationally related and possibly also a practical area of learning. Courses are aligned towards occupational work processes and company business processes. A practical placement is integrated into training. Successful completion of training confers the right directly to exercise the occupation in question as a qualified skilled worker in a training occupation governed by federal state law.

Those completing the qualification acquire the necessary employability skills for the exercising of a qualified occupational activity. These bring together professional competence, autonomy and social competence to form overall occupational competence. Methodological competence, communicative competence and learning competence are also intrinsic components of employability skills. They are in possession of competences for the autonomous planning and processing of professional tasks assigned within a comprehensive area of learning or field of occupational activity which is subject to change.

Description of the qualification (learning outcomes)

Observe the behaviour, abilities and knowledge of individual children and small groups; recognise requirements and identify situations
Support social learning processes in the group of children whilst taking account of cooperation within the staff team and with parents or legal guardians
Initiate and support educational processes
Plan, implement and reflect upon guided activities
Support children’s play and create scope for play
Create opportunities to practise speech for the purpose of further development of understanding of language, powers of expression and language skills
Create spaces and incentives for movement
Carry out activities from the fields of music and creative design
Support and guide the acquisition of everyday skills and development of values
Encourage scientific experiment and observation of natural scientific phenomena
Familiarise children with various cultures, customs and practices and take account of these in pedagogical work
Prepare and carry out meals
Carry out care measures; recognise the causes and consequences of errors in care
Foster healthy physical development; comply with and apply hygiene measures; assist with the cleaning and bodily care of small children
Care for ill children in the case of minor illnesses
 Communicate with parents and education professionals within the scope of the education and teaching partnership and during team consultations
Carry out housekeeping activities
Accord due consideration to health and safety at work and to the rules of hygiene
Accord due consideration to correct conduct in the case of accidents, initiate first-aid measures
Accord due consideration to environmental protection regulations, avoid damage to the environment

Access requirements: 

In accordance with the provisions in place in the respective federal state:

at least a lower secondary school leaving certificate or an educational qualification recognised as being equivalent pursuant to the regulations of the respective federal state or

intermediate secondary school leaving certificate or an educational qualification recognised as equivalent or entitlement to attend upper secondary school in accordance with the regulations of the respective federal state.

State final examination:

  1. Following completion of training within the scope of the curriculum stipulated at a full-time vocational school or
  2. Following admission as a non-pupil by the education authority of the federal state.
