Qualification Information

Type of qualification

This qualification is a higher education/university degree. A system of tiered qualifications has been agreed upon in the European Higher Education Area. These are Bachelor degrees, Master’s degrees and doctorates.

Master is the title given to academic qualifications which are awarded following successful completion of the second cycle according to the German Higher Education Qualifications Framework and the qualifications frameworks of the European Higher Education Area. Persons acquiring academic degrees at Master’s level are qualified for a career in academic research or for activities on the labour market. The usual period of study is a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years, equivalent to 60 and 120 ECTS points respectively (normally a total of 300 ECTS points).

Description of the qualification (learning outcomes)

Knowledge and understanding

Persons acquiring a degree at Master’s level have demonstrated knowledge and understanding which normally builds on and significantly extends and deepens the knowledge and understanding acquired at Bachelor level. They are in a position to define and interpret the particular characteristics, limits, terminologies and schools of thought within their field of learning (extension of knowledge). Their knowledge and understanding forms a basis for the development and/or application of independent ideas. This may take place in a practical or research-oriented manner. Master’s graduates have a broad, detailed and critical understanding reflecting the latest status of knowledge in one or more specialist areas (deepening of knowledge).

Skills (use of knowledge)

Master’s graduates are in a position to apply their knowledge, understanding and abilities to resolve problems, including in new and unfamiliar situations, that are connected with their subject of study within a broader or multi-disciplinary context (instrumental competences). They are able to integrate knowledge and deal with complexity. They are also able to make decisions which have a strong foundation in academic research on the basis of incomplete or limited information whilst according due consideration to societal, scientific and ethnic findings which arise as the result of the application of their knowledge and of their decisions. They are to act independently to acquire new knowledge and skills and are largely able to operate in a self-directed and/or autonomous manner in conducting their own research or practically oriented projects (systemic competences). Master’s graduates are able to operate at the latest status of research and practical application in explaining their conclusions and the information and reasons underlying such conclusions to professional representatives and laypersons in a clear and unambiguous manner. They are also able to network at an academic research level with professional representatives and laypersons regarding information, ideas, problems and solutions and to assume special responsibility in a team (communicative competences).

Access requirements: 

For the base courses of study (traditional German courses of higher education study such as the first degrees of “Diplom” or “Magister”, State Examinations):

  • higher education entrance qualification
  • in accordance with federal state regulations on access to higher education for applicants with vocational qualifications who are not in possession of a school-based higher education entrance qualification

For the Master’s level: first cycle degree at least at Bachelor level plus further entry requirements to be defined by the institute of higher education.

Successful completion of a Master’s course of study in accordance with the examination regulations.
