Qualification Information

Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the M.Ed. in preschool educational studies students shall possess knowledge and understanding of:

  • international agreements on education and social education, e.g. the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the Salamanca Declaration
  • ideology, culture and educational role of preschools
  • theories, concepts and methods in early childhood educational studies forming the foundation of preschool practices
  • educational research and its uniqueness
  • academic topics and matters of debate in the field of early childhood education
  • a variety of methods of assessment of children’s learning and evaluation of school practices and related matters of debate
  • teachers' ethical guidelines and their moral premises in the context of the teaching profession


On completion of the M.Ed. in preschool educational studies students shall possess the skills to:

  • analyse, criticize and support the work of preschools from the point of view of objectives and theories
  • organize and take responsibility for preschool practices that are constructed on democratic principles and preschool subject areas
  • define and carry out assessment of children‘s learning and of preschool practices, support and make use of assessment results in the working environment
  • participate in and demonstrate leadership in curriculum planning in the preschool environment, including curriculum development and innovation
  • apply accepted educational studies research methods and carry out small-scale research
  • gather information about their field of specialization, e.g. from academic journals and electronic databases, and make use of it in the working environment
  •  organize meetings, training sessions and professional communication with parents, colleagues and other professionals


On completion of the M.Ed. in preschool educational studies students shall possess the competences to:

  • evaluate the social relevance of education and contextualize it within the role of each education level
  • in collaboration with others, take policy-changing decisions with regard to the social and educational-political context of preschool teacher professionalism
  • critically regard their own position as responsible professionals, both within the school system and in society as a whole
  • analyse and respond to any manner of problem potentially connected to social and cultural diversity in gender, origin, religion or disability
  • interpret and critically discuss the results of research into learning or other aspects of education
  • create a varied and flexible environment for play and learning that focuses on children‘s interests, strengths and developmental level
  • initiate and lead projects, taking responsibility for the work of non-uniform individuals and groups
  • demonstrate leadership in developing and improving the work and working practices of preschools and in creating new knowledge
  • take independent work decisions and supporting them on a professional and theoretical basis
  • demonstrate originality in developing ideas about the working environment
  • apply and take a stand on diversity in assessment methods, based on preschool learning objectives
  • take responsibility for their own professional development, continuing education and further studies
  • share with others the results of research and developmental projects
