Pre-Bologna research master's degree in the field of mathematics (no legal status)

Qualification Information

Graduates will demonstrate in-depth mastery of research methods in the field of mathematics. They will be capable of undertaking autonomous research on complex national and international projects, of taking part in a complex teaching process at university level, and of carrying out interdisciplinary research and development in various fields of modern technology such as telecommunications.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

  • A completed single-subject academic bachelor's programme in mathematics, of any stream,
  • an average grade of at least 8 in mathematics subjects in the undergraduate programme; candidates with a lower average grade may be permitted to enrol in the programme if they demonstrate scientific potential and have a suitable bibliography,
  • active knowledge of one foreign language or passive knowledge of two foreign languages.

Examination performance is scored as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

In order to complete the programme, candidates must complete all course units in all subjects in which they have enrolled, present individual research in a postgraduate seminar, write a master's thesis and defend it in public before an examination panel. Graduates of this programme must complete the programme by the 30.9.2016.
