Qualification Information

Knowledge, ability and skills
On completion of doctoral studies the student should have fulfilled the following criteria in addition to those fulfilled at the previous level:

1. Knowledge and understanding
1.1. The student has acquired extensive and deep understanding of the main theories, principles, concepts and the most recent findings within a selected area of health sciences or bio-medical sciences. He has deepened considerably his knowledge from that acquired at the previous levels.
1.2. The student has adopted an original and critical way of thinking as regards the area of research and is able to put forward and develop theoretical ideas.
1.3. The student possesses an understanding of the nature of scientific research and is aware of the rights and obligations of scientists, including matters concerning ethical conduct towards study participants and colleagues, discretion, copyright, ethics and intellectual property as regards results and data.
1.4. The student has initiated the creation of new knowledge and its interpretation by means of research that has withstood analysis and critique by scholars in the relevant field.
1.5. The student possesses knowledge and understanding acquired through individual research which is considered an important contribution to the relevant field of research.
1.6. The student has a knowledge of the systems used in the financing of research and its evaluation and understands how research is applied for academic, administrative as well as commercial purposes.

2. Practical ability and skills
The student is competent in performing the following tasks:
2.1. To carry out a research project by setting research goals and milestones and setting priorities for their execution.
2.2. To design and use systematic methods for acquiring and analyzing information on complex problems using appropriate research tools and materials.
2.3. To apply general and specialized research instruments which are used in his area of research and in related areas.
2.4. To retrieve appropriate information from the research literature and other sources of information and to apply information technology in working with information, recording it and presenting it in a systematic manner.
2.5. The student has written applications for grants and permissions.

3. Theoretical ability
3.1. The student has applied new methods or known methods in a new way to expand the knowledge base of his area of research or his discipline.
3.2. The student has through his research tackled very complex and new problems and taken them to conclusion.
3.3. The student has written about his research well organized research papers which have been published in recognized international publications.
3.4. The student has written a thorough monograph which constitutes a compendium of the research which he has published and has been found by qualified persons in the University to be fit for a doctoral defence.

4. Communication skills and information literacy
4.1. The student is competent in communicating in an effective manner with his peers, scholars and the general public about his area of expertise.
4.2. The student has experience in working in a team with others and has worked effectively with supervisors, peers and coworkers within an institution and in the wider academic community, including critical dialogue and discussions about scientific subjects.
4.3. The student has taught and supervised students at lower levels of study.
4.4. The student has demonstrated that he can present and defend his research orally in seminars or at oral examinations and can explain and defend his research to those managing research funds.
4.5. The student has demonstrated his professional independence and initiative and can take responsibility for his own work, direct and be responsible for the work of others and inform and teach others about research methods and academic topics.
4.6. The student is competent in using any software which may be of use in his area of research for the purpose of analyzing and presenting research data.
4.7. The student is competent in assessing critically any numerical and graphical information relevant to the field of study.

5. Learning skills
5.1. The student has adopted the will and ability to learn and acquire knowledge while approaching all knowledge with a critical and open mind.
5.2. The student seeks knowledge, is disciplined, careful and aware of the limitations of his knowledge, he is self-assured and shows initiative in his research.
