Course Information

Knowledge

On completion of study, students should be able to:

  • Describe and compare some main classical sociological theories of media and their role in societal development and in shaping our existence.
  • Demonstrate his/her knowledge of theoretical subjects and differences in media and communication studies.
  • Understand the relationship between the media and other principal players in society, politics, economics and culture.
  • Analyse and evaluate the main characteristics of the Icelandic media and communication systems.
  • Explain the social and legal position of the Icelandic media, their role and influence.
  • Explain the theoretical and methodological basis of the principal methods applied in media research.
  • Explain and argue for his/her own research findings.
  • Explain the main ethical concern of scientific work.

Skills

On completion of study, students should be able to:

  • Organise and execute minor research in the field, independently or with others.
  • Evaluate media research.
  • Write a research plan or application for a research grant.
  • Write scientific abstracts, reports and articles.
  • Use major data repositories available in media studies.
  • Use appropriate technology in analysing data.
  • Analyse and describe statistical data.
  • Work on projects and research in cooperation with others across fields and disciplines.

Competence

On completion of study, students should be able to:

  • Use his/her knowledge of media and communication theories and research to analyse and evaluate developments and changes in the field, to give counselling, e.g.in policy making, and to contribute to the field with own research.  
  • Make use of his/her knowledge of media to analyse and evaluate development and change in media.
  • Independently and professionally define a research subject and pose a research question or hypothesis and initiate own research.
  • Use statistics to analyse data and explain the methods used, their advantages and limitations.
  • Use qualitative methods in collecting and analysing data, and explain the methods used, their advantages and limitations.
  • Initiate a research project and organise and take responsibility for the project and the work of others.
  • Discuss and argue for his/her own research and put it into the context of theories in the field.
  • Communicate clearly theoretically complex subjects and research findings, both within and outside the academic context.
  • Continue his/her academic studies, maintain his/her knowledge and add to it.
