Qualification Information

Students will be able to: 

(general competences)

  • demonstrate knowledge and application of appropriate methods of research and development of own practice,
  • undertake research and transfer knowledge into practice,
  • take responsibility for own professional development and learning by evaluating and reflecting on own work (experience learning, intervision, supervision),
  • establish partnership relations with users and other groups,
  • develop new knowledge and understanding of the field,
  • work in accordance with ethical norms and the professional code of conduct,
  • cooperate in an interdisciplinary team and communicate with all actors involved in the education process (children, adolescents, parents and professional staff),
  • reflect on and evaluate existing educational practices and identify unexploited possibilities for raising their quality,
  • develop higher cognitive skills associated with the creation of new knowledge,
  • demonstrate a capacity for leadership and organisation,

(subject-specific competences)

  • demonstrate originality and creativity in identifying and addressing professional issues in the education of children aged up to 12,
  • use a range of research approaches in education,
  • demonstrate advanced knowledge in the broad technical fields of teaching in the first and second educational cycles,
  • demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the selected field (music, sport, art education, Slovene language, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences) in the education of children aged up to 12, 
  • critically monitor the latest developments in theory and practice in the field of general elementary teaching,
  • seek out new sources of knowledge in the professional and academic field of general elementary teaching,
  • take responsibility for managing the educational process,
  • carry out cross-curricular integration and take a holistic view of the educational process,
  • demonstrate a capacity for critical (self-)reflection and (self-)evaluation of educational work and research, 
  • create new ideas (creativity) in the field of education, 
  • work autonomously in the field of education, 
  • act on the basis of ethical judgement.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

Candidates must complete all credits from all relevant parts of the programme in order to complete their studies.

  • A completed first-cycle study programme in a relevant previous field of study (first indent of Article 38a of the ZVis), consisting of 240 credits; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme consisting of 240 credits in another field, if prior to enrolment the candidate completes the course units that are essential for further study; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme consisting of 180 credits in another field, if prior to enrolment the candidate completes the course units that are essential for further study and demonstrates previously acquired knowledge and competences in the subjects covered by basic studies in education science and in the field of general elementary teaching; or
  • a completed professional higher education programme consisting of 180 credits which falls into the field of ISCED 14 (Teacher training and education science), if the candidate completes course units essential for further study totalling 60 credits, which the candidate completes as an additional year; or
  • a completed professional higher education programme under the old programme in another field, consisting of 180 credits, if prior to enrolment the candidate completes the course units that are essential for further study and demonstrates previously acquired knowledge and competences in the subjects covered by basic studies in education science and in the field of general elementary teaching.

Examination performance is scored as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).
