Knowledge:
The Postgraduate Studies Programme "Plasma Physics and Applications" is an international Postgraduate Studies Programme developed and certified with financing by Erasmus Life Long Programme (LLP)-Curriculum Development (Project Number: 510587-LLP-1-2010-1-GR-ERASMUS-ECDSP). It offers students specialised knowledge on physics and on the technology of laser-generated plasma. These knowledge refer to the cognitive (experimental and theoretical) fields of plasma physics, laser physics, laser pulse interactions with materials, optoelectronic technology, and clean energy production from laser-fused hydrogen.
Skills:
Ability to produce new knowledge and apply it through logical, combinational interdisciplinary thinking. Ability for the experimental and theoretical production of knowledge and results, using the laws of physics, mathematics, electronics, and computer simulations.
Competences:
Upon graduating, the graduate shall be able to use this specialised knowledge and apply methodological thinking in order to produce new knowledge, core and/or applied in the field of the Postgraduate Programme, i.e. the experimental and theoretical plasma physics, laser physics, laser pulse interaction with materials, optoelectronic technology, and clean energy production from laser-fused hydrogen. The graduate shall be able to successfully and professionally tackle either the academic field (high level research) or private bodies / companies dealing with high technology, production, and innovation, in the field of the Postgraduate Programme.
Learning outcomes:
The Postgraduate Studies Programme titled "Plasma Physics & Applications (PLAPA)" is aligned with the effort made by Europe to lead the way in the production of knowledge on issues related to science and technology concerning the interaction of strong laser pulses with matter, while also investigating the possibility of producing clean energy by fusing hydrogen with the use of laser.
To this end, upon acquiring the diploma titled "Plasma Physics & Applications (PLAPA)", the graduate can perform the following:
- Participate in research (experimental and/or theoretical) in the fields of experimental and theoretical plasma physics, laser physics, the interaction of laser pulses with materials, optoelectronic technology, and clean energy production from laser-fused hydrogen.
- Work in companies (of the public or private sector) producing products of cutting-edge technology in the above fields, by providing specialised knowledge.
- Consult public or private sectors on issues of cutting-edge technology related to the subject of the Programme.
- Autonomously establish companies producing cutting-edge technology related to the subject of the Programme.
- Offer as an expert his/her specialised services on issues of cutting-edge technology of strategic importance (e.g. clean, unlimited energy).

The Postgraduate Studies Programme has been developed within the context of the Erasmus Life Long Programme (LLP) - Curriculum Development action by eight collaborating Institutions of Europe, with the purpose of offering students quality postgraduate training. The students of the Postgraduate Studies Programme of the Department of Electronic Engineers of the School of Applied Sciences of Crete T.E.I. shall be able to make use of mobility in the following collaborating European Institutions, both for the preparation of their dissertation and for attending a course or courses. Similarly, the students of the collaborating Institutions shall be capable of making use of mobility both for the preparation of their dissertation and for attending a course or course of the Postgraduate Studies Programme in the Department of Electronic Engineers of the School of Applied Sciences of Crete T.E.I. Mobility is supported by the Erasmus programme and the courses are accredited through the ECTS units.

The purpose of the Master course "Plasma Physics and Applications with three directions: a) Inertial Fusion, b) Laser Physics, c) Plasma Science» is to provide specialized knowledge and high level skills in a scientific field with strongly interdisciplinary nature. The scientific field of action of the M.Sc. is the high power laser radiation interaction with matter with emphasis on the creation and study of plasma and its innovative applications. The interdisciplinary nature of the subject of the M.Sc. requires the synergy of different disciplines of physics and engineering such as the plasma physics, optoelectronics technology of strong Lasers, Material Science, Nuclear Engineering and related electronics. One of the main applications of this sector internationally is the exploration of clean energy from fusion using lasers. This is of strategic importance for Europe in accordance with the European roadmap of research infrastructures in the field of energy. The aim of the M.Sc. is the training of young scientists in this very important sector internationally to enable the country to continue to actively participate with specialized scientific personnel in the international developments for these innovative technologies. Teaching subjects include: Plasma Physics, Electrodynamics, Principles of Scientific Computing, Research Methodologies, Quantum Mechanics, Physics & Technology of lasers, Atomic processes in plasmas, methods for plasma diagnostics, dense plasma theory principles of fusion with lasers, laser interactions with matter, Target and fusion (with lasers) reactor technologies, modelling & numerical study of plasma, radiation safety and laser, nonlinear optics, high power lasers, and M. Sc. thesis.

Access to this type of qualification have those who hold a Bachelor Degree (level 6). The selection of graduate students is mainly based on the following criteria: the overall grade of the Bachelor Degree, the grades in undergraduate courses that are relevant with the subjects of the Master’s program, the performance in thesis, where is foreseen at the undergraduate level and any research activity of the candidate. The detailed application of the above mentioned criteria, the definition of additional criteria or the conducting of examinations and interviews, the results of which are taken into account in the selection, are determined by decision of the relevant Department.
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 8.
