Qualification Information

Graduates will be able to address scholarly problems in that they will have gained a detailed familiarity with the theory and methodology of research in archaeology and be able to apply them autonomously.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

In order to complete the programme, students must successfully complete all course units prescribed by the study programme (examinations, seminar papers, fieldwork, lab classes) and successfully defend a master's thesis in public. Graduates of this programme must complete the programme by the 30.9.2016.

  • active and passive proficiency in two world languages,
  • an average grade of at least 8 for academic performance.

The collegium of the Department of Archaeology may, by a special decision, recognise previous work as a condition for enrolment for candidates who have completed a work placement and have an average grade of at least 7.2. 

The same conditions apply to candidates who have completed other university programmes, where the department, taking into account the topic of the master's programme, defines the contents which candidates are required to master in the first semester of the programme (up to 2 differential examinations).
