Are you interested in a unique master's degree program concerning Fire Safety? Do you want to contribute to a more fire safe society? With a master's degree in Fire Safety you will have the competence to handle advanced and complex fire safety issues! Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, campus Haugesund, has educated well over 500 fire safety engineers over the last 20 years. We offer a Master's program in Fire Safety Engineering as one of only eight institutions in the world.

Fire Safety is becoming more and more important in today's society, and the need for knowledge and competence in this field is increasing rapidly. The primary objective of this master's program is to provide industry and society with highly qualified candidates who through in-depth knowlede in the field can contribute to a more fire safe society. One of the most important aspects in this context is measures to reduce risks related to major accidents. The master's program is organized in close contact with industry partners focusing particularly on fire technical issues.

Bridging course for prerequisites Master in Fire Safety

Interested in taking a Master¿s degree in Fire Safety but do not have the prerequisites?

From the summer 2018 you now have the ability to take our bridging course. It is an intensive course over two weeks with lectures, and project assignments over the summer.

The course starts week 25 with lectures, laboratory exercises, tutoring and study groups in Fire dynamics, and continues week 26 with Active and Passive Fire Protection. After these two weeks two project assignments will be handed out for the students to work with until the 27th of July. The course will have a grading scale of pass/fail on the project assignments.

A passing grade in this course will give you a place in the program.

Access requirements: 

Applicants to the program are required to have a bachelor degree in Fire Safety Engineering.

Applicants with another technological bachelor degree may also be considered for admission, if they in addition have passed the following courses from Stord/Haugesund University College, or equivalent from other institutions:

  • ING2043 Fire Dynamics (10 ECTS)
  • ING2045 Active and Passive Fire Protection (10 ECTS)

Our institution does not, for the time being, offer these two courses taught in English. They will however be available at HVL as intensive study courses taught in English from Spring 2018. The admission deadline for the intensive study course was on 1st of March.

Minimum requirement for admission is the cumulative grade point average equivalent to, or better than, a C in the Norwegian system.

Applicants to English-language further education or master's degree programmes must document English proficiency at a higher level by one of the following options:

a) Vg1 English in Norwegian upper secondary school (140 annual hours) with a grade of 4 or higher.

b) International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with at least 6.0 points.

c) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with at least 550 points for Paper-based test (PBT), at least 213 points for Computer-based test (CBT), or at least 80 points for Internet-based test (IBT).

d) Other documentation may be approved by individual assessment.
