History and Civic Education

Course Information

General Description:
Objective of a study programme:
To prepare a qualified pedagogue of history and civic education able to work according to general education and informal education programmes.
Learning outcomes:
Having completed the study programme History and Civic Education, the graduates will:
acquire the knowledge and understanding about political, social, economic and cultural processes of world history based on the achievements of historiography and will be able to apply them in practice;
know political, social, economic and cultural processes of the history of Lithuania and will be able to convey the knowledge about them in the context of world history;
have the knowledge of the general tendencies of the development of society, the concept of public security in the context of contemporary threats, the peculiarities of the Lithuanian political system;
be versed in the basics of political society, features of active citizenship, goals and peculiarities of the process of civic education;
be able to collect and systemize documentary and other material, to analyze and interpret it on the basis of the main methodological principles of the sciences of history in the course of studies and lifelong learning;
be able to compose a well-structured text on the topics of the history of Lithuania and world history and to present it to targeted public groups;
be able to apply the general and professional competences of the subject pedagogue in practice and to design his/her professional career;
be able to communicate and cooperate with pupils, their parents and other parties in the process of education as well as the representatives of Lithuanian public authorities and public organizations; seek the development of pupils’ competences in a responsible manner; follow the principle of continuous development in one’s professional field;
be able to listen to the opinion of team members and convey personal ideas in subject-specific tasks and project activities;
have a faculty to think critically and to apply innovations in professional activities in a creative manner; form one’s values and evaluate various public phenomena on their basis; apply the general competences acquired through active participation in public life and professional activities.
Activities of teaching and learning:
Lectures, student-centered lectures, seminars, audio and video materials, interactive teaching, modeling of situations, discussions, dialogues on subject-specific topics, search for, collection and handling of subject-specific information, analysis and summarizing of materials, portfolio, pair and group work, collective generalization of ideas, self-dependent work, literature analysis, analysis of historical sources, text analysis, critical reading and listening, preparation and delivery of presentations, practical tasks, peer learning, written assignments, comparative essay, project work, practical training, colloquium, examination.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
The cumulative assessment is applied to assess students’ knowledge and abilities. Every study subject is completed with the examination (E) or assessment of self-dependent work (project) (SDW). The final score is drawn by summing up the constituent parts of the cumulative assessment (attendance, active participation, mid-term tests, self-dependent work, examination).

Study subjects (modules), practical training:
The scope of the theoretical study subjects in the field of pedagogical studies is 30 ECTS.
The scope of pedagogical practice is 30 ECTS.
The scope of the study subjects in the major field (history) is 90 ECTS.
The scope of study subjects in the minor study field (civic education) is 90 ECTS.

Distinctive features of a study programme:
The study programme is a joint study programme of the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences and the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania.
Access to professional activity or further study:
Access to professional activity:
The Bachelors of the study programme of History and Civic Education will be able to work as history and civic education teachers in Lithuanian comprehensive schools implementing the programmes of basic, secondary and non-formal education. They will also be able to work in the institutions of formal and informal education, vocational schools and as leaders of riflemen’s clubs.

Access to further study:
The graduates of the Bachelor’s study programme of History and Civic Education will be able to continue studies in second-cycle Master’s study programmes of the humanities and social sciences at the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences and other Lithuanian universities as well as second-cycle Master’s study programmes of the public security study field at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania.
