Geophysics, Doctorate

Course Information


A three-year theoretical or experimental research-based postgraduate programme of studies in geophysics at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland. The programme provides at least 180 ECTS units of credit and qualifies for the degree of philosophiae doctor, PhD. Entrance requirements are a research-based MS degree or a comparable qualification.

The scope of the research project shall be 180 ECTS units. Doctoral studies are governed by special Faculty regulations.

Type of knowledge

The student possesses knowledge and understanding acquired from research carried out on an individual basis.

The student's research findings shall contribute in a significant way to the development of the relevant field of study.

The student shall have initiated new knowledge, and its interpretation, with research which measures up to reviews and critique of other scholars in the relevant field.

Knowledge, ability and skills

On completion of doctoral studies the student should have fulfilled the following criteria in addition to those fulfilled at the former level:

1. Knowledge and understanding
1.1. The student has acquired extensive and deep understanding of the main theories, principles, concepts and the most recent findings within a selected area of geophysics. The knowledge is more in-depth than acquired at previous levels.
1.2. The student has adopted an original and critical way of thinking in his/her area of research and is able to put forward and develop conceptual ideas within geophysics.
1.3. The student possesses an understanding of the nature of scientific research and is aware of the rights and obligations of scientists, including matters concerning discretion, copyright, ethics and intellectual property regarding results and data
1.4. The student has initiated the creation of new knowledge and its interpretation by means of research which has withstood analysis and critique by scholars in the relevant field.
1.5. The student possesses knowledge and understanding acquired through individual research which is considered an important contribution to the relevand field of research.
1.6. The student knows about the systems used in the funding of research and its evaluation, and understands how research is applied in an academic as well as commercial sense.

2. Practical ability and skills
2.1. The student has the ability to carry out a research project by defining research goals and milestones and setting priorities for their execution.
2.2. The student has the ability to design and use systematic methods for acquiring and analyzing information on complex problems.
2.3. The student knows how to apply general and specialized research instruments which are used in his area of research and in related areas.
2.4. The student knows how to retrieve appropriate information from the research literature and other sources and knows how to apply advanced technology when working with information, recording it and presenting in a systematic manner

3. Theoretical ability
3.1. The student has applied new or known methods to widen the knowledge base of his area of research or his discipline.
3.2. The student has tackled complex and new problems and contributed significantly to their solution.
3.3. The student has written about his research well organized research papers which are of the standard expected in recognized international publications.
3.4. The student has written and published a compendium of the research in a monograph that has been found to be fit for a doctoral defence by qualified persons in the University.

4. Communication skills and information literacy
4.1. The student is able to communicate effectively with his peers, scholars and the general public about his area of expertise.
4.2. The student is able to work with others, both in a small group and within a wider scholarly community. He/she can engage effectively in a critical dialogue and exchange of views about scientific subjects.
4.3. The student is able to explain, present and defend his research in seminars or oral examinations.
4.4. The student has demonstrated his professional independence and initiative and can take responsibility for his own work, direct and be responsible for the work of others, inform and teach others about research methods and scholarly subjects.
4.5. The student is able to critically assess numerical and graphical information relevant to the field of study.

5. Learning skills
5.1. The student has adopted the determination and ability to learn and acquire knowledge while taking a critical stand to knowledge and approaching it with an open mind.

The student seeks knowledge, is disciplined, careful and aware of the limitations of his knowledge, and is self-assured and shows initiative in his research.
