The origins of the University of Lisbon date back to the Middle Ages.
In 2011 the University of Lisbon celebrated 100 years. It was the affirmation of its history, education, heritage, science, innovation, culture as well as projects for the future of the institution.
Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) is now one of the 18 faculties and institutes belonging to the University of Lisbon, following the recent merger between the classical University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon.
ISA is the largest and most qualified school of graduate and post-graduate degrees in the Agricultural Sciences, in Portugal, and its know-how is recognized nationally and internationally.
Located in the heart of Lisbon, Tapada da Ajuda – an Environmental and Botanical Park with about 100 ha, of recognized interest – it is also a pleasant place for events, recreational activities and the discovery of sites, such as the interesting Amphitheatre of Stone, the Belvedere, the Garden of the Parada, the Rugby field, the Astronomical Observatory, the Exhibition Pavilion, the Auditorium of Lagoa Branca, among others.

Applications are done through the national admission contest (concurso nacional de acesso) organized by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGES), or through special higher education contests.
There are some institutions in Portugal that give scholarships to international students and it is advisable that applicants confirm every year whether these grants are available and the eligibility terms: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; Fulbright Commission; Instituto Camões; Luso-American Development Foundation; Fundação Oriente.

There are 19 Student Residences, for accommodation of students of the Universidade de Lisboa, in the degrees of Bachelor and Master, which need to be away from their household for attendance of academic activities. The total accommodation capacity is 1023 beds, 645 for female students and 373 for male students. These beds are distributed through 496 rooms, of which 311 are doubles, 107 are triples and 78 are singles.
The University Stadium of Lisboa is an excellent locality for engaging in physical activity and sports and, given its Higher Educational environment, it stands to reason that the stadium would try and cultivate scientific knowledge, particularly in the field of physical activity and sports. With a long tradition at ISA the practice of rugby benefits from two grass surfaced fields managed by the alumnISA association.
A Medical Centre is available at Ajuda Campus.
There is a study centre for students in Lisbon, Ágora, near the Tagus River and not far from de Cais do Sodré railway station. This centre has study rooms, graphic design services, computers and a bar.
