ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING (INŽENјERSTVO ZAŠTITE ŽIVOTNE SREDINE) is an one-year Master programme (60ECTS) of academic studies offered by the Faculty of Occupational Safety in Niš.

The basic objective of the study programme is to enable students to apply scientific and specialist achievements in solving problems of environmental protection and improvement, and to manage quality of the environment. Programme targets imply students’ gaining knowledge and skills to:

  • analyse anthropogenic effect on conditions and processes in the environment,
  • analyse and asses ecological risk,
  • develop and apply sustainable solutions in environmental protection,
  • develop and apply policies and strategies of sustainable development and environmental protection,
  • develop and apply methodologies, methods, tools, and procedures for environmental protection management,
  • follow procedures of assessing the effect on the environment and perform effect assessment,
  • establish and realise principles of integrated prevention and control of environmental pollution,
  • monitor environmental pollution and degradation,
  • provide supervision in environmental protection,
  • use and promote the best practice and technology in integrating energetic efficiency and environmental protection,
  • promote innovative activities and team work,
  • provide permanent education and development of a knowledge system for sustainable development and environmental protection.

On completion of the study programme, the student becomes professionally competent for:

  • ecological risk assessment,
  • developing local strategies of sustainable development and environmental protection,
  • assessing effect on the environment and making study reports on the effect assessment and on the strategic effect assessment,
  • making study reports on assessing risk from hazardous materials,
  • devising prevention plans and programs for hazardous material accidents, their sanation and recovery,
  • conducting integrated pollution prevention and control and creating documentation on the integrated licence,
  • evaluating efficiency and effectiveness of processes, equipment, and devices as they relate to environmental protection measures,
  • projecting systems and devising and realising plans and programs for environmental protection monitoring,
  • creating and updating a registry of conditions and pollutants,
  • preparing reports and reporting on the environmental condition,
  • realising procedures for waste and hazardous material management,
  • establishing and developing an integrated system of management,
  • providing supervision in environmental protection,
  • organising environmental protection in a business system,
  • education and management of knowledge about environmental protection,
  • managing projects and innovations in a system for environmental protection,
  • developing metrics and methods to assess the effectiveness of an environmental protection system,
  • applying IT in Environmental Engineering,
  • developing engineering ethics
  • pursuing doctoral studies in the same or related areas.
Access requirements: 

As a general requirement, for Master programmes lasting two years with 120 ECTS a candidate has to have obtained a Bachelor diploma with 180 ECTS points (or 240 ECTS for one-year programmes).
Specific admission prerequisites usually entail specific knowledge in certain disciplines and should be checked at the institution’s website for each individual programme a student is interested in.
