Environment and Natural Resources, Master's

Course Information

Two year academic and research-oriented graduate programme in environment and natural resources at the University of Iceland. The programme is organized and administered collectively by the 5 Schools of UI: School of Education, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, School of Health Sciences, School of Humanities and School of Social Sciences. Students graduate from one of the faculties within the above schools with the degree magister scientarium (MS) or magister artium (MA). The programme comprises 120 ECTS, including a research project of either 30 or 60 ECTS and qualifies graduates to be admitted to doctoral programmes at level 3. Candidates must have completed a first University degree (BS, BA or other equivalent degrees), and fulfil other considerations set by the programme board.

Upon completion of the degree each student should have fulfilled the following goals, in addition to what was gained at the previous level:

Knowledge

  1. The student has gained interdisciplinary and international knowledge about the environment and natural resources.
  2. The student possesses knowledge of theories and management tools in the various academic fields that contribute to the field of environment and natural resources.
  3. The student has acquired knowledge through research and can put the latest relevant knowledge in context within their field of specialization.
  4. The student understands how the field of environment and natural resources transcends traditional disciplines and how the various disciplines act together.
  5. The student possesses knowledge of science ethics within their field of specialization.
  6. The student understands sustainable development within the field of environment and natural resources.
  7. The student is familiar with appropriate research methods and can provide arguments for their own findings.

Skills

  1. The student has adopted relevant research methods and procedures within their field of specialization.
  2. The student is able to collect, analyse and evaluate data and information about the environment and natural resources.
  3. The student is able to apply interdisciplinary thinking and problem solving of the field of environment and natural resources to various situations.
  4. The student is able to present and critically assess information, can argue and support research conclusions within the field of environment and natural resources in both academic and professional settings.
  5. The student is able to perform interdisciplinary, independent and professional analyses when tackling complex topics within the field of environment and natural resources.
  6. The student can explain, evaluate and apply common approaches used within the field of environment and natural resources as it relates to sustainable development.
  7. The student is able to collaborate and interact in multicultural and interdisciplinary teams.
  8. The student can apply relevant research methods and develop projects within their field of specialization.
  9. The student can apply critical and transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary thinking and analysis.

Competences

  1. The student has gained proficiency in learning and seeking knowledge independently.
  2. The student can be a valuable member or a leader of an interdisciplinary and international team, interact, cooperate, and discuss topics within the field of environment and natural resources.
  3. The student can communicate professionally both verbally and in writing to scholars and to a general audience.
  4. The student is able to communicate professionally within the field of environment and natural resources in English.
  5. The student can evaluate the suitability of different approaches to tackle complex topics both in a local, national and international context.
  6. The student can apply their knowledge and skills to make independent decisions and support them in a professional context.
