This is the largest department in the Faculty of Philology and Arts, currently enrolling over 500 students, and employing nineteen permanent teaching staff, and a number of visiting professors.
The mission of the English Department is to provide a high quality education through the development of interdisciplinary approach, to encourage in students critical, analytical and creative thinking, and the use of latest literature and technological achievements. Students acquire knowledge of English language, literature, culture, thus being equipped to pursue a variety of professions, from teaching, to jobs in the field of culture and communication management. Although the curriculum has a strong theoretical basis, it is also directed towards practical implementation of theoretical knowledge. Classes of integrated English Language Skills frequently turn into creative workshops, and so do many literature and culture classes. Apart from classical disciplines, the Department is particularly strong in Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, Semantics, Shakespeare and Drama, Science-Fiction Literature, and Methodology of English Language Teaching. A variety of elective courses enables students to acquire knowledge in Philosophy, Aesthetics, Cultural Theory, History of Art etc.
