Qualification Information

Definition
A three-year academic and applied research-oriented graduate programme at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland. The programme is 210 credits leading to the degree of philosophiae doctor, Ph.D. Admission requirements are a research oriented MS degree or equivalent.

Knowledge, competence and skills
On completion of the doctoral examination the student can demonstrate knowledge, competence and skills as detailed below:

1. Knowledge and understanding
1.1  The student has gained extensive and detailed knowledge of the main theories, fundamental aspects, concepts and methods in a chosen area in the field of electrical engineering.
1.2  The student has adopted innovative and critical thinking in his research activities and can present and develop theoretical concepts in his field.
1.3  The student understands the nature of scientific research and knows the rights and obligations of the scientist, including aspects relating to confidentiality, copyright, ethics and intellectual property rights of results and data.
1.4  The student has taken the initiative in creating new knowledge and in interpreting this knowledge with research that has withstood inspection and review by academics in the field in question.
1.5  The student is an expert in the field he has researched and his research is considered a significant contribution to the research field in question.
1.6  The student knows the processes of funding research and understands how to apply research in academia and trade.

2. Type of knowledge

2.1  The student has extensive and far-reaching knowledge of electrical engineering.

3. Practical competence
3.1  The student knows how to implement a research project by setting research goals and milestones and by prioritising activities.
3.2  The student knows how to investigate complex problems and infer from it.
3.3  The student can apply both general and specialised research tools that are used in his area of research and in related fields.
3.4  The student knows how to gather appropriate information from research journals and other sources. He knows how to use information technology to work with information, file it and disseminate in a systematic way.

4. Theoretical skills
4.1 The student has applied new or established methods to extend the knowledge in his field of research or study.
4.2  The student has embarked upon complicated and novel problems in his research and brought them to conclusion.
4.3  The student can write well-organised academic papers that are of such quality that they are accepted for publication in recognised international academic journals.
4.4  The student has written a detailed dissertation of his research, which has been accepted by the proper authority of the university for a doctoral defence.

5. Communication competence
5.1  The student can effectively present his area of specialisation to his peers, to academics and to the public.
5.2  The student can work with others in a team and in the wider circles of academia. He can participate in critical discourse and exchange of views on academic issues.
5.3. The student can argue in favour of and explain his research orally at seminars and conferences.
5.4. The student has shown professional independence and initiative and can accept responsibility for his own work, manage and shoulder responsibility for the work of others and inform and teach others about research methods and about academic matters.
5.5  The student can critically evaluate sundry numerical and graphical information in his field.

6. General academic competence
6.1. The student has adopted willingness and gained the competence to learn and gather knowledge, while appraising all knowledge in a critical manner and with an open mind.
6.2. The student searches for knowledge, he is disciplined, thorough and aware of the limitations of his knowledge. He displays initiative in his research work.
