Qualification Information

Students will be able to:

  • think scientifically,
  • participate in the addressing of complex work problems using an interdisciplinary approach,
  • carry out creative and independent research,
  • address the scientific problems of future employers,
  • demonstrate understanding and critical judgement in the addressing of difficult and complex research questions,
  • address research problems in a creative and autonomous manner,

In order to complete the programme, candidates must successfully complete all course units defined by the programme and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation. Doctoral candidates must publish at least one scholarly article in the field of their doctorate in a journal indexed by the SCI or SSCI. The doctoral candidate must be the lead author of the article. The scholarly article must be published or accepted for publication before the defence of the doctoral dissertation.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

  • A completed second-cycle study programme in the field of biomedicine, bioengineering or mathematics/natural sciences; or
  • a completed study programme leading to a profession regulated by European Union directives (93/16/EEC for doctors, 78/1027/EEC for veterinarians, 78/687/EEC for dentists and 85/432/EEC for pharmacists) consisting of at least 300 credits; or
  • a completed study programme leading to a specialisation and a previously completed professional higher education programme in the field of biomedicine, bioengineering or mathematics/natural sciences; additional course units for individual fields consisting of 30–60 credits are determined for candidates by the programme board for Biomedicine; or
  • a completed study programme leading to a pre-Bologna research master's degree or specialisation following the completion of a study programme leading to an academic higher education qualification in the field of biomedicine, bioengineering or mathematics/natural sciences; course units totalling 60 credits will be recognised for candidates; or
  • a completed programme leading to an academic higher education qualification, adopted before 11 June 2004, in related disciplines from the fields of biomedicine, bioengineering or mathematics/natural sciences.
