Qualification Information

Students will be able to:

(general competences)

  • be included in and independently lead scientific research work,
  • demonstrate thorough understanding of theoretical concepts of the field – philosophical, sociological, psychological, pedagogical and adult education aspects,
  • demonstrate thorough understanding and mastery of various research methods, procedures and processes, and develop critical and self-critical assessment,
  • analyse, synthesise and envisage solutions and consequences,
  • apply knowledge in practice,
  • autonomously pose, formulate and carry out a comprehensive research process,
  • independently develop new knowledge, skills, techniques, practices and materials through research work,

  • respond to abstract problems that extend and redefine existing procedural knowledge and practices,

  • systematically recognise and understand the foundation(s) and history (development) of education systems, theory and theoretical complexes, and scientific paradigms,
  • identify and resolve specific pedagogical issues applying scientific methods and procedures,
  • lead original research in the field of education sciences,
  • carry out independent, original and publishable research in the field of education sciences,
  • demonstrate cooperative learning and creative communication skills in the research environment, resolve problems and participate in interdisciplinary research teams in the field of education,
  • coherently master knowledge, integrate knowledge from various areas of education and apply it in academic practice,
  • demonstrate understanding of the general structure of education discipline and the links between its sub-disciplines,
  • integrate new information and interpretations in the context of education,
  • understand and apply critical analysis methods and development theories, and apply them in solving specific pedagogical problems,
  • master organisational and leadership skills in the field of education,
  • analyse in detail and reflect on social norms and relationships within education environments, manage activities with the aim of making changes thereto, and act as intermediary between the academic research and social environment,
  • demonstrate knowledge of social systems, particularly processes in education,
  • demonstrate a critical nature regarding the broadest implications of the application of knowledge in specific education and professional circumstances, and provide assistance in the pedagogical management of an individual, department and/or group,
  • develop skills in applying knowledge in the area of education sciences,
  • use information and communication technologies and systems in the research of education.

  • A completed second-cycle study programme; or
  • a completed academic higher education programme adopted before 11 June 2004; or
  • a completed study programme leading to professions regulated by EU directives, or another integrated master’s programme consisting of 300 ECTS credits; or
  • a completed study programme that leads to a specialised qualification and a previously completed professional higher education programme adopted before 11 June 2004, if prior to enrolment the candidate completes course units totalling 34 ECTS credits. Prior to enrolment in the study programme, such candidates must pass differential examinations in subjects from the second-cycle General Elementary Teaching programme.

Examination performance is scored as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10). 
In order to progress from the first year to second year, students must complete 50 ECTS credits from the current year. The passing of examinations from the following subjects is mandatory: Research of the Didactics of Education and Scientific Research in Education. (30 ECTS credits). In order to progress from the second year to third year, students must complete 50 ECTS credits from the current year. The passing of examinations from the following subjects is mandatory: Individual Research Work I and Individual Research Work II. Students must also meet all first-year requirements to progress to the third year.

Students complete their studies when they have successfully met all prescribed requirements of a study programme, written and successfully defended their doctoral dissertation, and completed a total of at least 180 ECTS credits.
