Course Information

The themes of the Doctoral School address all levels of analysis, including Luxembourg, European, comparative and international law. The School encourages students to evaluate legal epistemology, the theory of law and philosophy of law and is committed to supporting an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective. It develops leading research in economic and financial law, based on a comprehensive transnational approach.

The doctoral school offers both theoretical and practical training, providing a useful background for writing a thesis and adopting a broad scientific culture. The training programme is comprised of 5 modules, during each of which PhD students must complete a certain number of courses and achieve the specified ECTS.

Duration Information: 

The time allotted for preparing a doctoral thesis is three years, including the PhD defence.  An extension may be granted, for a maximum of one additional year, by special dispensation from the University President.

Access requirements: 

Admission criteria: 

  • Candidate’s qualifications and minimum grades: average mark of 14/20 in a Master 2 or equivalent degree, or a mark within the top quarter of students in a particular course,
  • Written work: dissertation or published paper, failing which, a comprehensive thesis proposal (minimum of 40 pages), written in one of the University’s languages,
  • Candidate’s motivation (letter in support of the candidate’s application and interview by at least two members of the doctoral school),
  • 2 letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes).

  • If no PhD posts are advertised on the University’s jobs portal, please contact  a thesis supervisor whose fields of research include that in which you wish to pursue your thesis.

  • Candidate interviews: the interview is aimed at assessing the candidate’s motivation and aptitude to work independently and in terms of research. Candidates are interviewed by at least two members of the doctoral school, one of whom will be the thesis supervisor.
