Qualification Information

Knowledge:

1) Know the history, evolution, notation and aesthetics of Byzantine music and psalmodies.
2) Know Christian Belief and its following in the daily functions and life of the Church, the symbolism and its importance for the everyday personal life of humans in modern times.
3) Know the method for conducting academic and science research on Byzantine Musicology, specifically in History, Systematic and Ethnomusicology.
4) Know the setting of hymns or complete Sacred Services to music, based on verified, classical psalm texts.
5) Know the transcription of Byzantine notation in the European staff and vice versa.
6) Know methods for evaluating musical works, life or recorded musical practices.
7) Know the history, evolution, and importance of Orthodox Christian belief.
8) Know the cultural importance of the Christian tradition, as well as of other musical traditions.
9) Know the worship texts of Christian Orthodox Faith and the Byzantine Music Tradition, the importance thereof, as well as their contribution to the spiritual cultivation and cultural development of individuals, communities, and peoples at a European and international level.
10) Know church hymnology and religious poetry, the expression of Byzantine music and the effect thereof on the culture and development of a person, and their contribution to civilisation in general.
11) Critically understand modern social reality and its problems, while being able to participate in Missionary work.

Skills

1) Participate in the conduct of Orthodox Worship as Chanters.
2) Apply the rules of proper chanting, in accordance to the repertoire established.
3) Teach Byzantine music in private or public schools.
4) Have the ability of creating a Byzantine chanting Chorus.
5) Create musical ensembles using traditional instruments.
6) Record Byzantine music using computers.
7) Record music through various software.
8) Make use of and promote the value of Byzantine Music and Chanting Art and its contribution to the Balkan and wider European culture.
9) Apply the theory of Chanting making use of traditional instruments (Oud, Kanun, and Ney).
10) Communicate using modern practices and technical methods with persons and peoples of different religious musical traditions.
11) Cultivate and develop voluntary offering within Church, and to the wider society.

Competences

1) Put the knowledge of Chanting Art into practice.
2) Communicate with other persons and nations, through Byzantine and European noting.
3) Examine music manuscripts and discover elements comprising the development of church music, during the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period.
4) Have the ability to critically examine issues related to the aesthetics and expression of Chanting Art.
5) Demonstrate spiritual, professional, social, and moral responsibility, while working within the church organization or outside.
6) Teach Byzantine music and chanting in private or public schools.
7) Generate new ideas and scientific musical knowledge, drawing from the experience and the vault of timeless church chanting tradition.

9) Organise in terms of operations and administration the parish life of a community.
10) Make use of and effectively guide the volunteering contribution by members of the Church.

The purpose of the Tertiary Ecclesiastical Education, and consequently of the University of Ecclesiastical Academy of Vella, Ioannina, is the promotion and training of members of the Clergy and secular members of the Orthodox Church in Greece, of high educational level and Christian morality.  Specifically with regard to the Programme of Ecclesiastical Music and Chanting, its purpose is to train capable Chanters in order to man the Orthodox Parishes of the Church in Greece and the Greek Orthodox Churches abroad. The programme includes courses on Byzantine music, church music and chanting notation, European music, teaching of traditional musical instruments and secular music, history of music, along with courses of theological, service, hymnological, sociological content, and on the aesthetics of the Orthodox Christian art.
