Objective(s) of the study programme:
The objective of the study programme “Cosmetology” is to develop a high qualification creative and socially responsible specialist of beauty therapy, able to professionally and independently perform various cosmetology services, possessing contemporary cosmetology means, equipment and materials, able to manage cosmetology business, with thinking in broad, creative and critical way, constantly seeking personal and professional development in learning all life.
The learning outcomes of the study programme forms competencies needed for a beauty specialist in complex environment distinguish oneself in variety of tasks and their context. Delivering decisions in various professional activities area, it needs to manage various means and methods, to perform the activity it is needed to manage broad theoretical knowledge of fundamental natural science, human anatomy and physiology, to manufacture and put into practice of cosmetics tools, the industry of beauty therapy business, bases on new and applied results of research and necessary for various innovation introduction.
The study programme learning outcomes consist of abilities to plan actions according to foreknown objectives, to analyse and fix the results of own activities and to deliver the reports to coordinators, to correct activities regarding to analysis of results and recommendations of specialists, to execute various project activities, to adapt to continual and usually difficult foreseen changes, making dependent on progress of knowledge and technologies.
The graduates of the study programme will be able:
To know and understand the nature sciences – Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Biophysics, General and Organic Chemistry – areas; to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the structure and functions of the human body; to use physical and chemical bases of technical and life sciences to understand the mechanisms of action of cosmetics and equipment used in cosmetic treatment; to understand cosmetics ingredients and cosmetics manufacturing formula; to have the knowledge of the mechanisms of action and side effects of physical treatments, chemical compounds and mixtures used in cosmetology; to have the understanding and knowledge of business management principles, methods and techniques;
To evaluate the state of health and the symptoms and causes of select disorders and conditions affecting skin, to apply the principles of health promotion and a healthy lifestyle, to apply cosmetics testing and evaluation methods; to carry out various cosmetic treatments in a professional and ethical manner; to analyse the impact of environmental factors on business activity, to organize and manage a beauty salon business in a professional and ethical manner, to plan, organize and implement marketing activities, to apply national and international legal regulations pertaining to the professional cosmetic activity and cosmetic trade;
To apply cosmetics testing and evaluation methods evaluating and testing cosmetics quality, to use information technology to obtain and interpret data on cosmetic products and cosmetic ingredients; to evaluate an individual customer’s needs and conditions for cosmetic treatment; to select and apply appropriate cosmetics for the purpose of cosmetic procedures, to manufacture simple cosmetic forms;
To understand and foster personal identity and to appreciate the importance of multicultural diversity in the professional field.
Activities of teaching and learning:
In selecting the study methods in the study programme, the priority is given to innovative methods, oriented to the development of students‘ general and professional competencies of the study programme: auditorium hours (time spending with academic staff), student independent working hours (time spending working individually, performing compulsory practice to prepare for evaluation and time is needed for the evaluation).
In order to check if the students have achieved expected learning outcomes of the study programme, these assessment methods will be applied: the theoretical study’s outcomes are achieved through informational study methods: explanation, demonstration (especially important the lecturer’s work, knowledge are based on scientific research and insights); the practical study outcomes are achieved through methods as discussions, work in groups, independent work, case studies, problem teaching, experiment, presentation preparation and delivering, real problems solving during students projects (learning through laboratory practice, working place are based on student individual work, problems solving, tasks, work in groups); in order to achieve value related learning outcomes, such methods as using students’ self-examination and performance exercise are employed using student’s personal experience, etc.
In the study programme “Cosmetology” the student is an active, solving and responsible study process participant – the programme studies are oriented to students.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
In order to check if the students have achieved expected learning outcomes of the programme “Cosmetology” and separate elements of the study programme, the following assessment methods will be applied: verbal assessment methods; quiz methods (a frontal verbal quiz, an individual verbal quiz); presentation methods (presentation (public speech, presentation)); methods of written assessment (a research paper, reviews, reference list); graphical and visual assessment methods (idea and concept maps; poster presentations and demonstration of completed work); methods of cumulative and integrated assessment (folder or portfolio methods, case analysis, projects).
Study subjects (modules), practical training:
The study programme “Cosmetology” consists of:
General college education studies subjects that comprise 24 credits, 3 of which are electives.
Study field subjects that comprise 147 credits, 6 of which are electives. 6 credits are dedicated for educational internship, 24 credits are dedicated for professional internship.
9 credits are given for the preparation of the final thesis.
Three internships are included in the study programme “Cosmetology”: 6 credit educational internship that students complete in the fourth semester of the studies; 9 credits for professional internship that students complete in the fifth study semester and 15 credits for final professional internship that students complete in the sixth study semester.
A total of 9 credits are dedicated for electives of the study programme “Cosmetology”: it is possible to choose elective courses of the same and/or other field study’s subject (6 credits), also elective subjects can be chosen from additional general courses (3 credits).
