Course Information

The first cycle in Classical Studies aims to provide a general training, which enables students to get to know the cultural, civic and humanist identity and to develop scientific competences and critical awareness about the quality and rigour of their work. The competences and values that students should develop are to be applied not only in their personal and professional life, but should also allow them to progress to the second cycle in the field of classical studies, or in another field. From the third semester on, the Bachelor’s degree in Classical Studies offers two different branches with different objectives, namely:

 - Classical Studies;

 - Classical and Oriental Studies.

To study at the University of Coimbra is to pursue the intellectual history of the country in the school that graduated some of the most distinguished personalities of national culture, science and politics. With over seven centuries, the University of Coimbra has a unique tangible and intangible heritage, keystone in the scientific culture of Europe and the World; a capital that the University of Coimbra has applied to UNESCO World Heritage. The University is divided by the city of Coimbra in campus, contributing for the strong integration of the University in the everyday life. The biggest party of the city is the students' party, denominated Queima das Fitas, it takes place in May and it integrates many activities, as daily music festivals, sport modalities with cultural events.

The Faculty of Letters (FLUC) is structured according to a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate studies matching, on the one hand, the needs of a solid professional training and on the other, a scientific research project, its natural vocation. The FLUC aggregates different areas of expertise, each one hosting an abundant bibliographic information, therefore, it is organized into multiple Departments. By its participation in ERASMUS / SOCRATES Project, FLUC has been developing a progressive opening to their counterparts in Europe. Internationalization is highly valued, therefore, covenants, protocols or agreements with universities or Faculties of the European Union and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Have successfully completed secondary school or have an equivalent qualification

Have completed one of the following university entrance exams (central exams prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science): Philosophy; or History; or Language; or Portuguese Language

Admission Procedure: 

Applications are done through the national admission contest (concurso nacional de acesso) organized by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGES), or through special higher education contests. For more information please check DGES website (in Portuguese).
