The Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB) is a higher education public institution with a defined mission in creating, transmitting and diffusing technical-scientific and professional knowledge through the articulation of study, teaching, applied research and experimental development. IPB belongs to the European Network for Universities of Applied Sciences (UASNET), which main objectives include the transferability of professional skills and the integration of applied research in their professional and technological education mission.

The internationalization of the IPB is one of its current strategic challenges, due to the awareness that this will be a positive factor for differentiation among higher education institutions.

The School of Technology and Management of Bragança, established in 1990, carries out its training and research/development mission in the areas of engineering and enterprise sciences.

Applications are done through the national admission contest (concurso nacional de acesso) organized by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGES), or through special higher education contests.

Nowadays, 2700 IPB’s students receive monthly scholarships from 100 to 400€ (data from 2011). First year’s students should complete their candidature to the social support at the same moment of candidature to the access to the higher education system, following the calendar and norms established by the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES).

The Bachelor in Civil Engineering is awarded to those students that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and competencies required to solve problems and demonstrate a professional approach in the following domains: design, construction and maintenance/rehabilitation of civil construction works, involving the specialities of concrete and pre-stressed concrete structures, steel and composite structures, structures strengthening and monitoring, hydraulic structures, control and monitoring of treatment plants, geotechnical infrastructure, land supporting structures and road infrastructures; coordination of projects, safety and quality management, management of buildings and urban and inter-urban infrastructures.

The IPB has also students’ residence; however they are intended for national students with Social Services’ scholarship. The Social Services of the IPB offer 400 beds, located in three buildings of students’ residences in Bragança and two buildings in Mirandela.

The central canteen of Bragança comprises three rooms with diversified offer of meals.

The School of Public Management, Communication and Tourism (EsACT), in Mirandela, also owns a canteen, which serves lunches from Monday to Friday and dinners from Monday to Thursday.
