The Directorate is an administrative institution in the field of education and its main objective is to improve quality and support progress in education in accordance with law and government policies, best evidence and international standards.
Knowledge, Ability and Skills
At the conclusion of the doctoral program, the student shall be able to meet the guidelines listed below, in addition to what has been reached at the previous level:
1. Knowledge and Understanding
1.1 The student has an extensive and detailed understanding of the main theories, basics, concepts and most recent knowledge within a specific field of career counselling and guidance studies. The knowledge is significantly more substantial than that achieved during the previous level of study.
1.2 The student has adopted an original and critical way of thinking in relation to his/her research field and can put forth and develop scholarly ideas.
1.3 The student has an understanding of the nature of scientific research and knows the rights and obligations of scientists, including issues relating to confidentiality, copyright, ownership of results and data.
1.4 The student has taken the initiative to in creating new knowledge and interpreting it through research which has passed review and critique from scholars in the field.
1.5 The student possesses knowledge and understanding acquired through own research, which can be considered an important contribution to the field of research.
1.6 The student knows the systems for financing and evaluating research and has an understanding of how research is used for academic and practical purposes.
2. Practical Skills and Ability
2.1 The student can execute a research project by setting research objectives and milestones, and prioritizing project factors.
2.2 The student can design and use systematic methods to gather and analyze information on complex subjects with the assistance of the appropriate research tools and data.
2.3 The student knows how to use general and specialized methodological concepts used in his/her field of research and related fields.
2.4 The student knows how to collect appropriate information from scholarly magazines and other databases and knows how to use information technology to work with information, register it and present it systematically.
3. Theoretical Ability
3.1 The student can use new and known methods in an innovative way to expand the knowledge base of his/her field of research and subject.
3.2 The student can, through his/her research tackle new and complex subjects and guide them through to a conclusion.
3.3 The student has written well structured scholarly papers on his/her research which will be accepted for publication in internationally recognized scholarly magazines.
3.4 The student can prepare a detailed piece of writing which summarizes his/her published research and is considered acceptable for a doctoral defense of appropriate parties within the University of Iceland's Faculty of Social and Human Sciences.
4. Communication Skills and Information Literacy
4.1 The student can effectively present his academic field to colleagues, scholars, and the general public.
4.2 The student can work in teams with others and successfully cooperate with advisors, peers, and colleagues within the institute and within the wider frame of scholarly society, including participating in critical debate and exchange of views on scholarly issues.
4.3 The student can argue his/her case verbally in seminars or on oral exams and explain and defend his/her research to research funds' boards.
4.4 The student can demonstrate professional independence and initiative and take responsibility for own work, direct and be responsible for the work of others and inform and teach others research methods and scholarly subjects.
4.5 The student can use any type of software which can be of use in his/her academic field to analyze and present research conclusions.
5. Learning Skills
5.2 The student has adopted the will and skills to learn and gather knowledge, along with approaching all knowledge critically and with an open mind.
5.1 The student is driven to seek knowledge, is disciplined, meticulous and aware of the limits of his/her knowledge, is confident and demonstrates initiative in his/her research.
